Particular Individual
Hello fellow brothers & sisters of light,
I'm trying to put together my first gallery exhibit. The project featuring images of smoke, primarily human-esque figures that appear in it.
From the onset of the project I always had in mind the delicate nature of human beings in particular how a stray word or action can destroy the essence within. I have also since the onset had the intention of donating a share of the profits to a charity for children.
Around eight weeks ago I contacted the charity which I felt my images fit within their theme. No responce, I meet someone in the mean time who put me in contact with someone at the top of the charity and then two weeks later someone contacts me making excuses for not contacting me sooner because they don't have a venue.
I was informed that they are not in a position to lend any support i.e. monetary, location, drink etc but would give me access to their 600+ address book. After meeting with a board members I left not wanting to work with a institution that a couldn't respond to a email in a timely manner. I was seething inside when the board member said that times are hard a i should consider lowering my asking price on the images as her daughter had an exhibit the previous month and it was not well received. I have not seen her work. I bit my tongue but informed her that times are always hard for artist so I don't have much pity at the moment.:bang:
Everybody I've showed print to loves them and some even told me to increase my price. I'm doing a limited run of 10 prints per image and the images are 90cm tall.
Now the dilemma I face is that with the charity behind me I can get access to the Museum of Cycladic Art (I live in Athens) which is a prestigious establishment. But I hear that they too are in need of funding so again another portion of my profits would have go to them. I have not yet meet with the museum as I didn't know until now whether the charity was on board or not, so I don't know what else they could offer other than the space. I'm hoping they could either help with drinks, canapes maybe even with the printing. I have no idea what is the norm when doing this.
Now I don't know what to do. I had such a bad taste in my mouth after meeting with the charity that my artist temperament wants me to tell the to go to hell and just do it myself. I've just got to keep cool a little longer. I'm going to set a meeting with the museum next week a I guess I just need positive thinking.
Have any of you guys & gals done it this way? Is my entire approach wrong?
Any advice welcome. Amusing tales and not so amusing tales are encouraged.
Thanks in advance
Alex

IMO, you aren't really in a position to negotiate as you're the one pushing to exhibit your work. The museum has given you a venue, which is a nice gesture in itself. Take it and run with it.

I'm with Teuthida. It's going to take time and money to get your name known. One way or another, you have to make the compromises. Which compromises you make... well, that's your choice.
