I reguraly visit flickr's explored pics of the day via flickriver. This should be the most interesting photos of the day (so they say).
I know about the rules but I definitely do not understand why some pics are in.
There are outstanding images which really deserve to be viewed by many people. But there are also pics I wonder why? Namely pics of some toys, toysoldiers etc which are more than common.
Any idea why?

PS: I also had pics in flickr - explored and I wondered why

It's all about different strokes for different folks.
Not everyone is interested in tits, ass, motorcycles and junk cars.

Oh... Now I get it ! You need a new SE tube amp.

as well as city-, landscapes etc - I understand your opinion

regarding the amp - surely interesting but not the style my better half would love to see in our flat :-(

I've had one picture EXPLORED. I don't know why. I didn't get notified of the fact either. All of sudden the picture attracts a lot of attention and comments congratulating you on being explored. In my case it was a 13 to the dozen picture of a DIY camera. My most viewed picture to date. Holds little artistic merit though.

I would go check the pix of the people posting in this thread to see from whence they criticize, but I've learned that every time I do that around here my eyes start to bleed. . . not unlike Flickr in that respect. The fact of the matter is that good photographers are pretty rare, anywhere.

there are many good pics in flickr which are not explored, so I do not understand why documentary pics of eg. a toy, soldier or puppet, with only few comments and few clicks are in!
Which algorhythm will select it?
That's my point.

Explore is more about aesthetics than content. If you wonder why something was explored, look at the colors used, how striking the subject/processing is, etc. Photos in Explore are meant to grab eyes, and Flickr has a good idea of how to maintain an algorithm that locates photos that do that. A photo's popularity in favorites/comments also influences it.

Of course, the algorithm is a secret and it changes all the time, kind of like Google search rankings.

I've had a few 'exploreds'. I don't really know what it means either. It is surprising to me because I don't shoot nudes, cute things and I don't generally shoot in colour. I certainly don't expect to be popular with the masses.

Given that the choosing process is shrouded in mystery it's impossible to make a value judgement on anything chosen by it, however I do feel is nice when it enables your work to reach a bigger audience than it generally does.

What I do know is that posting to certain groups can automatically exclude you from contention. These are usually the kind where you post one image and then have to comment in x amount of other images in the group.

There's an article on 'interesting-ness' here...

And here's an explore checker so you can see if you've had any exploreds and not known it.

Hope this helps,

Bob. 🙂

many thanks, an interesting link!

Jeeb, that's an amplifier among modern electronics like rangefinders among dslr's 🙂 Beautiful. I had only one picture of mine ever 'Explored' and I didn't even know what it meant. But all publicity is good publicity, right?

I've only had one shot explored:

It was within a day of it being uploaded... I doubt there's an algorithm doing it automatically, I bet there's just a bunch of people assigned to flick through recent uploads and flag ones they like. You'll know if you get explored though if you're keeping track of your stats, as long as you're not used to getting thousands of hits per photo, per day 🙂
