I think it's merely about aesthetics (PS'd light leaks, HDR, bokeh), or content (fetishes, gear porn), hardly both, and of course, driven by popularity. I find it funny that many self-portraits by younger folks are in an attempt to look avant-garde in some way, but I'm staring at the photo thinking, "Kid, you're covered in flour! Simply a failed attempt at recreating what someone did last year!" Of course, people eat it up stating how AMAZING the shot is, along with other photos including the aforementioned examples. When I was at the beginning stages of photography, I was very experimental and was rewarded with a lot of explored photographs, but now that I've tried for a more serious approach with a new account, none have reached that explored status.
