Exposing Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

I use ordinary masking tape. Just make sure that you use a piece that is long enough to extend at least an inch onto the film, front and back.
 
OK, All.

Peter at "That's A Wrap" has 400' cans of Eastman XX 5222. He just quoted me 30 Euros per 400' can, I'm assuming that's for expired stock, which should still be OK. Anybody try the expired stuff from Peter yet?? He does take VISA. http://www.taw.eu.com/

He says shipping up to 2 KG to my USA address is 35 Euros. Anybody have an idea how many cans that would be?? For this price, I'd buy a -bunch- and throw it in the deep freeze. I'm pretty sure it will keep well. BTW 400' will make 70+ 36 exposure rolls. Quite reasonable..........

ElmoG, as pschauss says, stick the film onto the spool with a bit of masking tape. I don't put it top and bottom, but then you have to be careful not to pull the film off the reel when you reach the end.

Nokton, thats a great deal... I wonder if the film is expired?

I also asked him -how much- he has.
I think the 30 Euro stuff is expired, but should be fine.
Will last a long time if deep-frozen, being medium-speed stock.

I have close to 1000' at this point, but am willing to stock up.
 
I also just use masking tape to stick the film onto the spool's spindle but make sure you get the tape on the front and back (as well as round the spindle) of the film. Last week the take came off the spindle on one off my cassettes, luckily the tape stuck to the felt lips on the cassette but it was almost through to the shutter curtain. It was a painful job to get the film out off the camera.

I estimate (from previous shipping charges) that 1 400 foot can is about 1.2kg's (2.6/2.7lbs).

Just received another email from Peter at "That's a Wrap". One 400' roll of his XX would be 30 Euros + 35 Euros shipping (to my address in the USA). Two rolls of XX plus shipping would be 115 Euros. I asked about expiration dates and what quantities he had in stock, didn't get an answer to those questions. From the postings above, I would guess the film is out-of-date, but still good.
 
The Euro to $ rate just now is 0.6635 therefore a roll of film and shipping is €65 that is $97.97 in real money! Almost the price of fresh film in the US.

If your in the UK its a bargain but the shipping kills it.
 
Masking tape works best for me. I cut ten strips at a time, stick them down side-by-side on my loading table. Easy to do loading by touch, in the dark. Scissors I keep in my back pocket, so I don't lose them in the darkness.

Yup, it freaked me out the first time I seen this... (that and the person I always feel standing beside me 😱 )
 
Rather than using masking tape - try to find some gaffer's tape. this is the tape used in the movie industry to hold everything together! Comes in various width - I use 1" wide for sticking film on to the center spools. Tear off a couple of inches and roll it around the center - don't "tamp" down the end as it is murder to find it in the dark. Just leave a couple of mm "loose'. Peel it up a bit and stick the end of the film down on the spool, push down on the tape - and it is secured. The advantage is that when you unload the film, you can peel the tape off and leave it on the spool - it can be reused once or twice. After that you just cut it off and start on the next 1/2" of tape leader.
A big reel of gaffers tape costs about $20-25 from a movie supply house and lasts a long time ( i think they hold about 100+ ft of tape). The masking tape is less secure and that new stuff they have - blue colored one doesn't stick very well on the film.
With the IXMOO cassettes I just trim the V shaped leader and feed it in. Rarely comes loose.
