Agreed to buy a Nikon external varifocal finder today. (Got to get purchases over with before March.) This should be pretty handy, and much more compact than the turret type finders. This one covers from 35 to 135mm.
Thanks Rob. It is bigger than a single FOV finder, but smaller than several, or the turret type. I think I'm looking forward to walking around with just this finder to my eye and zooming it to see which lens works for each scene I notice. 🙂

It is similar to the one I had, Frank. Mine was bigger than a film cannister. Well, the cylindrical part may have been about the same, just a little shorter. The mount makes it bigger though.
I bought that zoom-finder from Rob. If there's any need, I can measure it's exact size.
It's not really small, and I'm hard pressed to tell whether it's smaller or larger than a 35mm cannister without holding both side by side. It makes up for that however by being a splendid tool for pre-visualisation..
Thanks all. I asked the seller for dimentions. I's almost the same dia as a 35mm plastic film cannister, and a bit shorter. 29mm diax 42mm length
There are 2 types of variable view finders. Some with a constant magnification that mask down the image for longer lenses, and some with variable focal length optics, which is what this Nikon finder has. Also this one is version II with a larger entrance pupil.
