I am considering a 50mm Summicron for 750.00 made in 1997. Same as the new one for $2000. Is this a fair price. Item is mint.

I think yes. I sold a silver one for $800 last summer, and a black one for $750 about 2 years ago. I'm speculating that a combination of the economic slowdown and strong alternatives from Zeiss and Konica are keeping prices on this lens in check.

Well, I took the plunge for $750.00. I am happy in the knowledge this lens is virtually the same as the new one at a much higher price. I used to have a mint dual range 50mm Summicon, but I traded it in on a medium format lens I needed at the time. Now I have the M8, and I do not feel as bad not having the dual range (it does not work so well with the M8) anymore. I do alot of portraits with my other lenses (35mm Summicron v.4, 90mm Tele Elmarit), and I am sure I will be very impressed.

I had to buy one today at KEH for $850 as a backup to my LHSA 50 1.4 Asph while it goes to Solms to get some adjustments made. The LHSA is incredibly sharp at all apertures but is fairly heavy made of brass, so I might keep the Summicron if it is sharp and light enough.

Anyone know how the Summicron and the Lux Asph compare at F/2?

I canceled the order for the 50/2. It looks like it is not that much smaller or lighter than my 1.4 so there is no point in spending that kind of money if I don't have to.

Besides, I found my Leica Pro Services forms and they do loan out gear. I'm sure they could send me a Summicron to use until the lux comes back from Solms.

ASPH elements solve specific optical design problems, and whether a lens has aspherical elements or not doesn't make it any better or worse.

The Lux ASPH might be better because the Lux has ASPH elements and the Cron does not.
