Fake black M3 on eBay. Beware!

I wonder if this is because English is not my mother tongue, but I find his wording very suspicious: 'this company called Leica' seems trying to suggest that he doesn't know anything about cameras or Leica, how come then that he knows having check if it made all black cameras?

On the contrary, your English is very perceptive. 🙂

Of course, pleading ignorance is the opening gambit in a strategy where you buy it, but he doesn't sell it. In other words you draw yourself into the trap, wanting to convince yourself it is real, and all the while he try's to look the innocent party. The next part of the game is to suggest you make an offer, and you do but below the $21,000 he wants, and he says it still won't pay for his child's operation, but reluctantly agrees. So he's laughing all the way to the bank. As far as he's concerned he's probably kicking himself he didn't call it an SP, it seems there are buyers around, but next time maybe?

An authentic example recently sold at auction for $470K. The seller will sell for this example for $21K.

So we have to decide between two possibilities:

It's a fake.

It's authentic, but owner had no idea how valuable the camera became. And neither the deceased owner's family, the estate sale company, nor the current owner did due diligence and they all made a ~ $400 K mistake.

Low probability events occur, but I'm betting on number 1.

Has anyone looked at the ratchet handle on this M3 closely?. My M3 and M4 handles close up very close to the hot shoe with almost touching. For some reason in 3 of his pic's the handle end is further away from the shoe. I do not think it's an optical illusion?

"Fakes" are everywhere... I have a small collection of fountain pens and you may be surprised at how many fake Montblancs are on eBay right now.
They even fake the boxes and instruction books. However if you know what to look for they are easily spotted.

This particular M3 looks good but how could you ever truly verify that it's legit?
