Famous Rolleiflex photographers

Ylla (ee-la, 1911–55) was the creator of a new genre in animal photography: the expression and personality in animals.
Ylla: The Birth of Modern Animal Photography recounts the fascinating, eventful, and very personal odyssey of a "New Woman" par excellence, from Belgrade to Paris via Marseille to New York. Originally taking beguiling photos in her studio and zoos, Ylla later traveled to Africa and India, where she died in a tragic accident while photographing a water buffalo race. Her Animals in Africa and Animals in India were groundbreaking. Ylla also introduced animal photography to children's literature, collaborating with Margaret Wise Brown and Jacques Prévert. Her books The Sleepy Little Lion and Two Little Bears, published in many different languages around the world, are classics.

Many years go I met Fritz Helm during one of his photo shoots in, IRRC, Bernuda, where I was in 1966 so this would have been almost sixty years ago. He was with his charming wife and I remember had three Rollei TLRs in his kit, two (probably Es or Fs) with 8/2.8 Planars, a Tele Rollei and a WA Rollei. An amazing kit, what it would be worth now, even then not cheap.

I was a young novice photographer with a new 3.5E2, a Weston meter and some film and not much else. He kindly gave me time to talk about myk photography, looked over my camera and gave me some very useful tips about shooting in the Florida sunlight.

I have never forgotten his kindness to a newly. To me it is a mark of greatness that those who are so privileged do not look down on the lesser mortals around them, but treat us like equals.

And one of each of the pooches 🙂

Yessir. Bruce definitely loves shooting with his Rolleiflex TLRs - in particular his tele Rolleiflex TLRs. That said, his main medium format cameras of choice have been his Pentax 67s...
