Tokyo notes

Always wanted to go to Japan! And this thread makes me want to do it even more - just need to find time!! It's never enough time:bang: One day I hope to visit there anyway. Hope you guys that meet there will have a good time and maybe even post some pics here from your get-together!

I might not be able to make it at 6am as my first train is at 530, earliest i can be there is 630. (sorry).

what abouts everyone?

also, Jon, know any good sushi 食べ放題s there? (buffets)

Nope. Almost 14 years in Japan but I've never been to the Tsukiji markets. There's bound to be some good sushi places there, though :)

I've been to Tsukiji before and attempted to eat at Sushi Daiwa, supposedly the best sushi-ya at the market, but I got there at 10 am and there were droves of people waiting to eat there. Ended up finding another place on the outskirts of the market and still ate some of the most amazing sushi I've ever had, including some mind blowing anago (sea eel).

If we finish shooting early enough, and there isn't too long a line, I'd suggest trying for Daiwa.

So it seems like people can get there at 6:30 at the earliest? Jon do you know if that is still early enough to shoot some of the action?

Tsukiji is one of those places where you will never get bored. I don't remember how many times I have been there. More than once for sure, but less than 10 times. The usual routine is to wake up early, take the first metro (about 6am), have my sashimi donburi and then off to work before 9am.

The auction zone was closed for a couple of years, and I've never ever been there. No fear though, the normal market for mere "mortals" like us is a good place to shoot. Plenty of red colour there, so come prepared with proper film.

As usual, here are a couple of shots from my archives shot with combination of Leica M3 and M6 and I believe I've used Provia 100F, Portra 160VC and 160NC there. Most of the scans are a little too warm, I know, but I like it that way for tsukiji... :D

A word about the last shot. I used to love negitoro (minced fatty tuna), but after taking this picture I cut down my consumption quite a bit! So... eat your sushi buffet before going to the market. Not the other way around!!

The frustration of being limited to digital on a trip to Japan two years ago was the primary catalyst for me buying my first film gear.

Thanks for the post about all those camera shops in Tokyo. I think I'm glad I didn't know about them then, but it'd be great to go back and browse.

Definitely go to Sushi Daiwa, but get there by 645am. I recommend focusing on the eel and the uni. Everything is fresh and excellent, but these were the items that, to me, stood apart as special.

So guys... how was the morning shoot on Saturday? I just got into Tokyo this afternoon, and loaded up my bag with 5 rolls of Ektar 100. I am planning an 'assault' on Tsukiji this Saturday. Never been to the auction place.
