fast color film?

I am heading to Mexico (Yucatan) in about a week. I will bring an assortment of film (Tri-X, Scala for B&W,\; Kodachrome, Velvia, Astia and Ektar 100) and I am wondering what I should bring for fast color film. Should I get some Fuji Provia 400 and push it to 800 or 1600 or should I go for Pro 800Z or Portra 800?

i've tried Press 800 and it was pretty good, but kinda grainy. not that saturated. i recently tried a roll of 800Z and it came out very saturated, but maybe that was the scans. however, it was not that grainy considering that it's a 800. would be interested in seeing other people's take onthis too.

1600, i tried, you have to be careful while exposing 🙂

maybe the scan or overexposing, otherwise, 800Z is quite neutral (as a fast speed color film can be of course )

a bit grainy, but it is a fast film 😀

I was referencing the color reversal (slide) film when I suggested pushing. Fuji says you can push the Provia 400 to 1600 and Kodak suggests pushing it EV200 to 800.

I've had good luck with the Fuji 1600. As was said, expose properly. 🙂

My favourite would probably be either Fuji Pro 400H or Kodak Portra 400NC - both pushed... (below 400H@800)

Alternatively there's Fuji Pro 800Z (which funnily enough I don't have without being pushed) or Superia 1600 - quite saturated, but pretty good for 1600!

I recently developed a roll of superia 800. It was surprisingly good! Just make sure you don't underexpose it, then it looks very grainy and terrible.

pushing provia 400F is brilliant. If I need a color film faster than 400 - that's what I use.

It's probably too late for your trip & may be too expensive, but you can order Fuji Natura 1600 from Japan (e.g., http://www.japanexposures.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=29&products_id=67 & there are also sellers on eBay). IMHO, it's noticeably better than the old Superia 1600, though not as nice as P800Z.

I've had great results from Fuji NPZ800 (now 800Z). This example is from a roll of NPZ that expired in 2006 iirc. Exposed at EI640. Should be noted that this is 6x45 and not 35mm as that has a bearing on the amount of grain.



Whenever I've pushed colour neg film it's looked pretty crappy (heavy grain). Fuji Provia 400F (now 400X) slide film seems to push well to 1600.

Last time I was in Mexico I don't think I had any problem getting my film manually inspected. Hopefully that will be the case again.

Anybody know how to say: please inspect my film manually?
