I can't get over it; everytime when I do a print from frames shot with my Industar 61 55mm lens I wan't to sell all gear except the body and this lens. Fantastic image quality...and the fun part is that I bought 2 of them and paid only 7 USD + 9 USD. But...to the point here:

Only thing that bugs me is that the lens is quite slow. What would be a lens that would give me the "same" image quality at f1.5 or f2 speed? I am going to buy a couple of jupiter-8 lenses, but those lack the click-stops on the aperture ring...
So, faster lens with sort of similiar image quality for B&W work - what lens could it be?

I will sell my 35/2 summicron and with that money I will buy couple of 50mm lenses. The total budget might be around 450 USD.
 
It sounds to me that you've got the Tessar bug. There is a certain distinctive look from a quality Tessar design lens that nothing else can quite match. The problem with that is that 2.8 is as fast as a classic Tessar design gets and, for many of them, that's pushing the design too far.

The most similar design to the Tessar is the Sonnar - it is, in many ways, a developement of the Tessar though I believe that Bertele derived it from the common ancestor, the Cooke Triplet, by a different path. It has a similar look, not quite as it doesn't loose as much sharpness in the corners, but still very similar. That's why the announcement of the ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar made some of us so happy.

If you'd like, I'll happily trade a Jupiter 8 & a Jupiter 3 as reworked by Brian Sweeney for that 35/2... :angel: No? Didn't think so 🙂 Much more seriously, you might want to look for the Canon 50/1.5 as it's a very good Sonnar clone that tends to be reasonably priced.

I enjoy my Jupiter 8. But, I miss the sharpness my (former) Industar 61 L/D when shooting vintage cars or old hotel signs. There is so much sunlight here that I dont usually feel I need the extra 1 stop. In fact I want cameras with faster shutters that will take the Industar so that I can shoot with it at wider apertures.

I'll just have to make a FrankenLens like that described at the Kiev Survival Site. That or buy another Bessa 🙂. Hmmmm... there's a thought.
 
The Helios-103 is said to be a Biotar design, according to various sources on the net. I'm not sure about it, though. I had a lot of fun shooting with my Fed-3 and its Panda I-61 52/2.8 ... now it is in the hand of my girlfriend, in L.A. ... I hope she's enjoying it 😉

About those sonnar copies; is there a real reason why to buy something else other than russian/ukrainian copies? I think I'll buy 2 x jupiter-3 and 2 x jupiter 8 lenses (+ maybe 2 of those older silver industars). If they deliver as good results as my industars then this is the path I am going to take... 🙂
 
The main differences between an authentic old Sonnar and a Jupiter (considering both are good samples) are build quality, and, well, authentity. Silver LTM Jupiters are made from very soft alloy which can be easily bent and feels cheepish, Kiev mount Jupiters are far better in this regard.

In practice Jupiter might perform better than uncoated pre-war Sonnar, and post-war Zeiss lenses are a bit too expensive if you're just to check out Sonnar look.

They do, but the alloy is stronger too. It is very easy to bend LTM J-8 filter thread, much harder with Kiev mount.

Maybe one could build a Franken-lens using the mount from a LTM J-8 and the lens block from a Kiev model?

Yep, I actually plan to make myself a Frankenstein 61 L/D per Russ' instructions 🙂
 
Yes, I saw that. Interesting if it could work the other way round, maybe put a Helios-103 or a Kiev J-8 in LTM mount. Especially the Helios could make a good lens. Is there a 50mm lens where the lens would fit? Candidates would be the J-3, the J-8 and the I-61.

Now, there's a concept that got me thinking.. Wouldn't perhaps work with RF lenses, as there's some space needed to fit mirrors between the back of the lenses and the film plane. Still, a couple of m42 lenses might work. Only caveat I see is parallax, but it would be a fun project. And why stop at two? With four you'd have four times the light gathering capacity..

Also got me wondering about DOF. Does it remain the same, or would it change? Hmmm.. I think I may have plans for coming winter.. I'll keep an eye open for a pair of real cheap m42's..
