Favorite camera strap?

Hi guys,

I just picked up my first Leica M6 a few hours ago but it doesn't have a camera strap. I was wondering what everyone's favorite camera strap is or which brands they'd recommend.

I'm looking possibly for a leather one. The Annie Barton has caught my eyes but it seems to be a bit pricey.

Funny, I just seconds ago placed an order from Gordy's for my new M10 (that I have yet to receive). I like the 50" version and then I take a waxed shoe lace and make about 4" connectors on each end. I sling the strap over the shoulder and carry the camera slung on my hip unless I am shooting. The thin leather strap is perfect and stealthy. I can wear it all day.
 
Luigi makes nice leather straps, but they are pricey as well. I like Tamrac straps. They are nice looking, comfortable, and have detachable Fastex clips to unhook from the camera when desired.

Have you -- has anyone -- used one of the Harry Benz straps in the rain? Or during heavy physical activity? I'm out in the rain a lot and going up and down small mountains a lot and with the damp from the sky and sweat I've had many many white shirts stained brown across the shoulders from leather straps and have been using a canvas strap for a few years as a result (By Roberu: https://www.amazon.com/ROBERU-Canvas-camera-holder-colors/dp/B00L1S80ZM?th=1 ). The Vintage B strap is beautiful though and if I thought it wasn't a likely source of stains I'd buy one.

Also, split rings -- mine suck. Anyone have any sources for good split rings or ideas for another connector between the strap and lugs? I've tried string connectors but they haven't held up very well. The connectors on the Leica strap that came with the camera are good but I don't want to use the Leica strap.
 
Why not the Leica strap? They have great connectors, are nylon material so they won't break suddenly like leather will, and have a decent pad on them.
 
My favorite strap is the original Strapateer, from the 60-70s, and I still have one or two, but these days I make my own. Fully adjustable, thin leather like the original Leica straps, but with a clip in it to make it possible to wear the camera on a shoulder under a coat in the winter, then unclip the strap to pull out the camera. I have these on all of my film cameras, and wouldn't have anything else.

There is a Korean company called Arnuvo that makes several variety of straps mostly leather and nylon/canvas. Varied widths and lengths.
I have several and find them to be excellent and inexpensive. I use the cloth straps either 30 or 40mm wide.
They remind me of the Deluxe Strap from Voigtlander but many more colors.

Domke gripper is a good strap, but after a while, the little rubber nubbins start to come off. The UP Strap - google it - is wonderfully flexible and the rubber pad stays put on just about any material. The strap is probably nylon, but it doesn't wear out.

I find it relatively easy and inexpensive to make do-it-yourself neck straps and wrist straps for my cameras by purchasing 7 meters of suede leather from a craft store and cutting it to my specifications. A simple square knot is all that is needed to close the loop.

I've been using the gripper straps since about 1996. I've had to replace two camera straps and one strap on my F2 bag. Not bad.
 
upstrap rf: for hanging off a shoulder. not great for going across your chest or hanging from your neck because of the floppy rubber grip.

I've tried a few, I have a thin Leica black leather strap that I keep because it's lovely - though I almost exclusively use the OEM one that shipped with the M6. I like that it's super easy to take off when I have the motordrive attached and don't need a neck strap.

For simplicity & exactly what I want & need, I make my own with materials from Strapworks.com. Nylon webbing-straps in 3/8" or 1/2" in a variety of colors. I stick with black, silver-grey or brown/khaki. Did some "burgundy" in the past & Olive drab. The former a bit flash for me, and O.D. doesn't work all that well in glossy fabrics, though an O.D. Bessa would look smart.

They have plastic slides in black or white in those widths, as well as flat metal ones in a variety of finishes. I used to do the metal ones for "security" but now stick to plastic for a scratch-free product. Recently I've gone to 1.5" with metal snaps & slides to make shoulder straps for my canvas Rothco tool bags - perfect for film lugging or a 6x6 SLR.

All in all I can make a light camera (Leica/Nikon RF) for under USD$3. Classic SLRS with 1/2" a half-dollar more. Only challenge is finding decent split rings that don't have jagged ends that shred the straps.--alfredian
