Favourite 40mm M-mount lens

40 cron with 5.5 to 39mm adapter. Unbeatable for IQ, size, build and price IMO. I modified the adapter ring to take the 12526 hood which also makes it look very cool...

I did the same thing 😉... much prefer the rectangular hoods ...Looks Cool Indeed !

helen, that 90 elmar had a 5.5 to 39mm adapter on it...good for filters and hoods.

i use the voightlander hood on my 40...very easy and cool looking.

Ha, I called Stephen/cameraQuest
But he was Sold Out of those hoods
Thats why I ended up doing adapter sugery 😱 & the other hood ...

the 40mm FOV is great, but my cameras don't have the right frames, so I play by the "regular" rules (35 OR 50).
I was wondering: since the late M4P's the VF frames are smaller. do you guys use the 35mm frame for your 40? At what distance is it reasonably accurate?

Having owned both the Nokton 40/1.4 and a Minolta M-Rokkor 40/2, I kept the M-Rokkor. Personal taste, but I found the OOF areas of the Nokton too busy.

Chalk up another vote for the Rokkor.

Rollei 40mm Sonnar, because it's the only one that I have.

And I don't feel like I need another (though I'd be happy to trial any lenses against the Sonnar that people would like to loan me).

Have the Nokton 40mm MC and the Rokkor CLE. I prefer the Rokkor.

Neither have particularly smooth and buttery bokeh, but to me the Noktons is a bit on the ugly side. While the Rokkor (although it can be crazy with circular highlights) has more of a deliberate character.

Both are super sharp at f2, but I just prefer the style of the Rokkor. Its a completely subjective opinion, but since getting my Rokkor my Nokton sees little to no use!

I had the Summicron-C 40/2 in the past (with my CL) and it was superb. The original M-Rokkor 40/2 was identical in quality. The M-Rokkor 40/2 second revision from the CLE that I own now performs slightly better on flare, otherwise it's much of the same; it seems to be a bit lighter than the earlier lenses. I'm using it on my M4-2 at present.

I also have the Nokton 40/1.4 MC. The bokeh at f/1.4 is a little busy, but at f/2 and smaller it is on par with the above three lenses. I use it mostly on the GXR-M.

Which is my favorite? Whichever one happens to be on the camera I'm using ... !

I should also count the 43mm 1.9 Pentax-L as a 40mm lens here. Now this lens is superb, but the Summicron-C is as good.

I understand that the 12526 and 12504 hoods would fit the cron with filed 11251 adapter ring, but on the website http://myweb.lmu.edu/sshepherd/Summicron40Hood.htm is said filing is necessary for the filter so it will fit snugly and not forced. So anyone here tried to attach the hood without filing the ring?

40/2 M-rokkor CLE gets my vote too. Love it as a travel lens.

I use an external viewfinder. I don't find it a problem to switch between the viewfinder and the rangefinder. Once you get used to it it's very quick.

50 mm framelines work for me with both, M4-2 & M7.

I use both the 40mm Rokkor and the 40 MC Nokon. I like both, but if I could only take one on a trip, I will take the Nokon, as it is more versatile with it's f/1.4 aperture. Unlike the equally compact pre-ASPH Summilux, it is actually sharp and contrasty wide open. And unlike the 35mm ASPH, it is still quite compact.

Ken Rockwell really savages the Voigtlander 40mm. I've never used one, but I wonder if he's right or just carping.
