Favourite Photographers

Short list: Matthew Brady, Timothy Sullivan and Alexander Gardner of the American Civil War; Robert Capa of the Spanish Civil War; Karsh, the Canadian Portait Photographer; Arnold Newman, Richard Avedon, Atget of France, Dorothea Lange, Edward Steichen, Eugene Smith, Anthony Armstrong-Jones of Britain, Walker Evans, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White, a British actor in Hollywood whose name I can't remember and lots of others from The New York Times, Daily News, Daily Mirror, Herald-Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, New Orleans Picayune, Associated Press, United Press, Paris Match, Vogue, Sports Illustrated, Yachting Magazine, National Geographic and newpapers and magazines all over the world.


Some are not just great photographers; they just happened to be there when great photographs were there to be taken...

Gilles Peress ("Telex: Iran" is a masterpiece of layered meanings and composition)
James Nachtway (not an RF guy, but his compositons and depth are one of the best)
Luc Delahaye (his book "Winterreise" was shot using the Contax G2 with color film. One of the BEST RF books ever produced. You will be moved. I believe he also used a Linhof 6x9 or 6x12 for a series on Afghanistan, NY and the Vatican called "Histories".)
Werner Biscof
David Burnett, Contact Press Images (he used a Speed Graphic 4x5 on Gore and Condie Rice during hearings. He also did excellent work on past Olympics using a Mamiya 7 RF and super-wide-angle lens).

Hi... One favorite, world famous photographer is W. Eugene Smith. He was beaten by company goons in Japan, when involved in exposing industrial water pollution in Minimata, Japan. The pollutants caused deaths, severe disease and mutations.

Smith's eyesight was affected by the beating, and he died some years later.

And, I feel that we have an exceptional talent in street photography right here in RFF, and that is Beniliam.

Some obvious choices in my top three: Atget, Brassai, Koudelka. If I had to choose only one it would probably be Koudelka.

There are so many really excellent and inspiring photographers and all have been mentioned earlier. But, for a favorite photographer working today I would have to say, Eugene Richards. His book, Americans We has some remarkably powerful images. Also check out Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, and his latest book, The Fat Baby.
Two other favorites that no one has mentioned are: Larry Clark, particulary for his work, Teenage Lust, and Danny Lyons. Look at his Civil Rights photographs and his book, Brave New World.
