Favourite Spots in London?

i'll second Brick Lane and suggest Leadenhall market and Smithfield market, but for a taste of something real, try Ridley Road market - the one that inspired the Soap opera Eastenders

Ridley Road Market (also known as Dalston Market) is great for photographs. Try a freshly made samosa or a kebab.

Anyway, it's nothing like Walford Market in EastEnders. Surely that's inspired by Roman Road Market.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Covent Garden or Borough Market. The parks are also a good bet and well used. The West End in general is good for different people at different times of day. The City can throw up some rare delights, unless architecture is your bag in which case, they are common. Whitechapel Market is a tough gig to pull off (I'm still working on it!) but worth it because the diversity of people is incredible. Savoy Passage is doable by someone with time and compassion.

What pictures you want will obviously inform where you go. We all know that good pictures come as much from being in the right place at the right time as anything else though. If you have a particular project in mind, start hanging around in the right areas......sure you'll get pictures of alt kids in Camden - but they'll just be more crappy snaps without any insight. Besides, no one gets dressed up for the markets anymore - when the council sold the culture out to tourism and business (Camden is run by cartels - and I'll gamble my new haircut on the fact that the fire was arson - even if those responsible are never found.) If you know the clubs though, where there will be queues.....if you know the people....it's a different story.

The market stall in Greenwich was quite impressive. It had an old Graflex in good working condition for 120£, a Russian copy of a Contax in great condition for 35£ and all kinds of other folders and stuff I was ready to buy. Eventually I only got a couple of nice old stiff leather lens cases. I like fleamarkets 🙂

Don't miss my favourite building in London, the Natural History Museum. And it's free, no-one objects to you taking pictures in the Great Hall with the Diplodocus skeleton and the majestic staircase. The Victoria and Albert museum the other side of Exhibition Road is worth a look as well. There is a small (free) collection of historic photographs as well as occasional photography exhibitions
