I cant believe you guys are actually doing a camera beauty pagent.
Don't take us too seriously... we don't take ourselves seriously.

I tell you, it's just another excuse to get together, order an immoderate amount of beers, and try to be rowdier than the previous time

Fair enough, actually sounds like fun.
It generally is fun. I'll put it this way. I never miss one (meet-up, not pagent)... and these have been going one every month for about 2 years or so.

We're all light!
It didn't take long, but I just bought a retro-grip for my Nikon F3 that's huge. Its about the same size as the grip on a MD-4 motordrive. I seem to be compelled to build my "monsters." LOL.
Back up a bit here...I felt the F3 was the very first SLR designed NOT to need an auxiliary "grip." You're seriously veering into Irrational Exuberance territory here...

Well, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, we have been described in some quarters as "a drinking group with a camera problem." Compared to some gatherings I've been party to, however, I'd say we're a fairly tame bunch.

John has it right: somehow I create monsters out of my cameras. Anyway I figure people from all over the world come to NYC to see people like me. This is not the suburbs. I like to think of myself as a one man tourist attraction.
Anyways I really love the grip. Kinda looks evil with a silver 45/2.8P or the Noct-Nikkor.

This will be our third annual beauty pagent. We've been getting together for more than three years already. We began meeting up I think in November or December of 2008.

Mostly we make fun of ourselves and we laugh a lot.
The GAS is a killer though. At one meet-up we had 7 M9's. A few of the guys seem to own almost the whole entire Leica catalog.
And yes, we are loud New Yorkers and a bit obnoxious.

If I can keep up my work pace from the last week or two, I should be able to take the 26th off and come. Won't have anything sexy to show at the pageant, but I will happily drink lots of beer and laugh at how loud you New Yorkers are.

As the reigning 2011 winner, I will of course be there. I'm definitely unveiling my M6 .85x "Zebra". No, not Panda, ZEBRA. Bow down, vulgarians! The title is mine! Bwahahahaha.
There is nothing more vulgar than a big ugly beat up Fuji rangefinder that supports interchangable lenses know as a "Texas Leica."
Anyways, for entertainment value I will assemble a three lens kit, wide, normal and short tele using a GL690 as the body. The G690BL that has dented corners and is known as "The Streetfighter" is included for comparison and entertainment value, but is primarily used as just a 3 and a half pound lens cap.

So, I decided to compete with this beauty...

Damaso, the originator of the New York Meet-Up, unfortunately will not be able to attend February's grand event, but he has generously donated a print to the list of prizes for this year's winner.
Although Damaso is far away (possibly Spain???), he is making arrangements where I can pick up the print from Adorama.

As promised though I won't be there I have donated an 11x14 print of this image as the prize for the contest! Thanks to Cal for picking it up from Adorama...

You know I was lying. I like that camera I linked to, but you know I'm too practical to buy special edition Leica stuff.

Only one special edition interests me: M6J with the special edition Elmar. I'd use this camera if I owned it.

I have a crazy deadline on Sunday which I hope won't interfere. It does mean that I'm definitely not bringing any top-secret camera projects this time.
I ran into that Louis Mendes guy on 23rd street today. Just then three norwegian students passed by on bikes flaunting an Argus, Leica mp, Nikon F2, and a Speed Graphic. A spontaneous camera orgy ensued. To make a long story short, I invited them to show up, so there may be some unexpected competition.
(WARNING: the Argus was really pretty!)

I have nothing cool enough to enter, but will be there.
Although its difficult to think of anything sadder than that, I have managed. The stupid-ugly-block-my-view-of-the-wires-and-skyline corrugated steel wall that was on both sides of the Brooklyn bridge walkway on the Brooklyn side appears to be migrating to the Manhattan side
This makes me sad.

Hmmmm, will anyone be bringing anything new this year? I won't be...
