Fed-2 Film counter

Ok what the way to make the film counter work on a Fed-2- I thought I had it working But, it does not show proper film number that been shot I know you set it At zero and let it go from there ? Lauren 🙁

Well on my FED-2 it works like this:

- Set the film counter to 0.
- Fire the shutter.
- Wind on.
- The film counter is now at 1.

There's no mechanics involved at all, it's simply the way the wind knob is designed. When cocking the shutter, the knob doesn't turn a full 360 degrees; it stops at 351 degrees, so that after 40 shots you're at zero again.

Then there is something wrong with my counter : Hum! Because after I wind it each time I find it at a differnet # ! Thanks

Well so do I. After I wind it's always at a different # than before. 😛

Anyway what happens when you wind it? Does the frame counter move all by itself (too loose perhaps)? The frame counter in the FED-2 is just a spring-held metal ring, all the counting it does is through the rotation of the knob.

How far does the knob rotate when you wind it? Some FED-2s have a little arrow engraved on the knob, you can check the alignment of the arrow on the knob and the little triangle for the film counter. It should turn a little less than a full 360 degrees.

As rxmd says, the counter works by turning 39/40ths each time you cock the shutter. Unless the counter disc is loose (it's held by a star-washer), then the only fault is that you're not turning the knob far enough (assuming the shutter works properly!).

All I know is that each time I wind the film advance the counter moves with it and when its finished the film counter will say 20 then the next I advance the film the counter will say 8 or something else :/ that's all I know and was wondering if there was something I was doing wrong : That's all : Thanks

It shouldn't do that! Is the counter ring loose? Sounds like it is...as long as you're turning the knob fully.

In your pictures the counter is at 15. Can you fire and re-cock the shutter a few times and write down each time the number on the frame counter?

My FED-2 looks pretty much the same. Its frame counter disc seems to be firmly attached to the advance knob. It moves ahead by one graduation at a time, but zeroing it before loading film can be difficult.

The frame counter is only the little disc beneath the knob. It has two little bumps. Hold the knob with one hand, then turn the disc with the fingernails of the other.

Question- is your FED-2 winding properly? I mean, does the winding knob tightly engage to wind on to the next frame after firing the shutter? I ask because the FED-2 I am fixing now did not wind properly. After firing, the winding knob would freely turn before it can engage with the gear pin at the bottom. When this happened, the counter disc would turn wildly beyond the minus-1 rotation it's supposed to do. When the winding knob engages and stops, the notch on the counter disc will indicate a number not the one supposed to be next- eg, starts at 1, then goes to 8, etc.

I've had that happen on a Zorki 1, it turned out to be caused by wear in the chassis where the lower part of the film sprocket sits (I'm sure you know which bearing I mean). I had to make a bush to take out the play. The play allowed the pins to fall on top of oneanother instead of beside each other, resulting in a double-wind. That would also have given the wrong frame-count.

Pressing the counter disc would reduce the friction and allow it to turn wrongly. At least you've realised where the problem lies so you have not wasted our time or yours. Enjoy the FED now 😀
