FED-2 Horizontal Adjustment Cover Screw DIY Suggestions

Hi everyone,

I recently got a FED-2 and realized it needed horizontal rangefinder adjustment at infinity. So, I removed the cover screw underneath the "E" and fiddled with the inner screw until my infinity target (the moon) was in focus.

However, somewhere in the process I managed to ruin the brass nut that the top cover screw binds into. It seems like the threads were worn down from my screwdriver turning. Now, the top cover screw won't screw in! It just keeps on turning in place and is very loose.

I definitely messed up here, so does anyone have any suggestions of a DIY replacement cover? I've thought of getting some sort of plastic pin and shaving it down until it fit snugly inside. Any tips? Currently, I have just regular tape holding the screw in place, but it is not very pleasing to look at 😕

It sounds and looks like you reamed out the threaded hole in the brass nut. You could locate a screw with larger diameter threads and insert it into the hole. A steel screw running in brass threads can be used sorta kinda as its own tap, but it would have to be be just the right diameter.

The brass nut appears to thread in the camera's cast chassis, and is slotted for removal and installation using an ordinary flat tip screw driver. If you could find another nut from a parts camera, remove the top of your camera, maybe you could replace the brass nut and use the original screw again.
