FED 2- on the way!

my 1st RRF!

a few months ago i was introduced to RFF photog upon finding a voigtlander prominent at my grandmothers house. i have become addicted! i love taking pics with the vp, but its bulk + quirky ergonomics does not make for the greatest everyday shooter. i decided i must have a smaller box that would accompany me everywhere.

after staying up way to late and getting up way to early to explore the depths of this forum i decided on the FED 2. it looked to have the best compromise of size and useable RF/VF. being new with no tech experience (yet) i wanted good odds of getting a nice working camera ready to go from day 1. a FED2 with no slow speeds ordered from yuri at fedka.com should net me a solid workhorse for a good while. i hope. 🙂

it comes the reprtedly sharp industar 61. obviously no experience with this lens, but from what i've read i think i will like it.

anyways, just wanted to share my excitement! is it true i am now on the 'slippery slope"?😱 😱

Congrats on your FED 2 purchase. I'm sure you'll like it as many of us do. I've never bought anything from fedka but I hear nothing but good things about them.

I'm pretty sure that with this second RF purchase, (a Russian at that!) you're definitely a gonner! You could hae saved yourself by not touching that beautiful Prominent RF at your grandmothers, but it's too late now. 🙂

Fedka's very good, and in the US, which helps sometimes!

I'm in the process of getting a Fed 2 as well from a fellow RFFer. I had a Leica IIIf for a while and it was very cool, so I'm also looking forward to the Fed. I guess welcome to the club for both of us.

There are other great Russian lenses like the elmar and sonnar copies (and the sweet 35mm jupiter) that can be had for a song (comparatively)...lots of room to try things out.

both deciding factors. i did pay a premium (compared to an ebay fed 2 that is), but getting it in a few days in most likely wonderful working condition from the well praised yuri more than compensates.

he already wrote me back and said it would ship tomorrow. so far fedka has been as advertised.

Good seller and good camera! If your looking for compact, also think about getting an I-22 or I-50 collapsible lens for your new camera...........

IMHO, you've made a wise decision going with "FED/fedka." You're going to have a ball. I don't think you'll regret the either of those choices.

But not to worry. The further down the FSU slope one slides, the less one is bothered with wisdom. 😉

The FED2 is a nice camera. My only complaint has been the somewhat squinty viewfinder compared to the Zorki cameras.

CVBLZ4, in doing my research through the archives i read a lot of your posts and checked out your website- good stuff. in some of your threads you inquired about various feds and kievs. did you ever pull the trigger on a kiev 4am? it was on my shortlist as was the zorki 3m. or are you sticking with the zorkis'? just curious.

yes, but i think it will still be a big improvement over the prominent.

No questiuon about that. The FED's wide RF base is also great if you plan to get any longer lenses.

No Kiev... got totally distracted. JimG sold me his Leica III that arrived a day before hoot's 90mm elmar. A fun pair. 😱 Soooooo..... the Kiev/FED research got put on the back burner ~ maybe WAY back. Funds are drained, but I'm grinnin' strap lug to strap lug. Still, I like readin' and hearin' about other's progress and Adventures in FSUdom, whether Zorki, FED, Kiev, Moskva....... (oooooo, gotta have one of those bad boys one day, too!) or whatever.

Anyway, thanks for visiting the ol' Ghosts. I'll have to change it up a bit after adding the Leica, but bloggin' is bloggin'.... it's all fun. :{

Agreed, definitely a slippery slope. I started with one--a Yashica GSN. Then another--FED-4. Then another--FED 2. Then another--Zorki 4. Then another... and that's how the story goes. 🙂

i like keeping it simple gear-wise, but in researching all the different russians it is easy to reason how nice it would be to have a different one for different settings. the slope is indeed slippery....

The FED-2 is definitely a good first RF. All my cameras are in storage right now and since it is taking longer to build my house than I expected I went and got one off eb*y!!

While the VF/RF isn't as bright as my Zorki 4, nor does it have slow-shutter speeds, I just love the size and balance of it. Definitely going to be my choice for street shooting. Can't wait to get my Jupiter 12 out of storage to put on it.
