Hello!
I've recently gotten into film photography and FSU rangefinders. Have purchased both the fed 3 and fed 2. I've only tried the Fed 3, and here's why.
The right spool on the inside of the fed 2 seems to be "incomplete" in my eyes, like it should be longer than that, no? Don't want to succeed in loading a film in there and have it slip off that stub of a spool

you are missing a part.the spool is not actually there and i do not know if the fed 3 spool fits[someone more knowledgeable will]
You can make your own spool from a used film cassette spool .

You are indeed missing the spool, not unkown for them to be missing. The same spool fits the FED 2, 3 and 4 and it's plain inside. Zorkis use different spools that will not fit (most, if not all, Zorki spools anyway). Later FED 1 spools also fit, not sure if the early sort will.

Hi,
How is old and new defined? I've some that have a solid end and others where the end pulls out a bit, presumably to make it easier to remove from the camera body.

I guess I would have to remove the "stump" to fit the cassette spool. I'll give it a try, found this: http://elekm.net/zeiss-ikon/repair/spool.html
Anyway, thank you

Hi,
Look on ebay, most of the sellers in the former USSR seem to stock them. Better to wait than wreck anything.

I wouldn't' remove the "stump".Any spool that can be push-fitted on to it will do.

Fujifilm spool not mountable to stump, nor to replace stump without drilling screw through the whole length of the film spool.
The Fed 3 spool, not surprisingly, fits nicely with the exact same screw-mount. Will probably check the local hardware store if they have something usable, or if they can help make a simple replacement
Is the stump an original fed 2 type "spool part"? Fed 3 spool and the stump are of the same hollow metal design with slits along the sides. If not fed, what does it belong to?

Hi,
Will this help?
The one on the left has the centre that pulls out. I'm not sure which version fits the FED 2. Leica spools are similar but not as good because they rely on pressure to hold the film (that can fail with age as the rivets spread) and not a sharp hook.

The stump is the the normal Fed-2 part. It is designed to accept a push fit spool. The cut segments can be prised open with a knife if needed to ensure a tight fit. The later version of the Fed-3 has a long cylinder with slits into which the film leader is inserted, replacing both the stump and spool. Most of the later Feds have this as well. The spool you need is the centre one in David Hughes's photo.

Did you give up or what?
Send me a PM with your postal address and I'll put the centre one in the post to you as a Christmas present.

Much appreciated David
Have tried it out in the Fed 3 as the Fed 2 is loaded with film on the fed 3 spool. It arrived safe and sound, fits perfect
Thank you so very much
