Fed 3 missing take up spool

hi i have a fed 3 that is in suposedly good condition however its missing the take up spool i was wondering what options i had for replaceing it there are ebay auction caliming to sell replacement spools but i dont know if they are the right thing
any help would be appreciated thanks

The brass take-up spools sold on eBay are 'the real thing', but they are after market. Current manufacturers might not take the measurements too seriously, and you would have a spool that might be a little too wide. Not good, and there's a cheaper way here if you don't want to pay anything and don't want to wait a long time.

hi thanks for the help. i have seen the film spool thing and i have a spool or two but the model of fed i have is the one with the suposedly fixed spool and i am not shure whether the plastic one from a 35 mm casset or the brass one fom ebay will fit

I think Payasams suggestion might be a better idea, you can find Yuri through fedka.com he is very knowledgable and specialises in UssR cameras. Not expensive either.

Before you start buying spools, check first if your FED-3 still has the spindle to put the spool in. The spindles in FED-3 cameras can be easily removed. A missing spindle will make even correct spools from the best supplier useless.

Some FED-3 came with fixed spindles for removeable spools. Spools made for Zorki or Zenit or even very early FED will not fit. Those which will go into later FED-1 (type g with short spindles), or FED-2 should fit.

However, some FED-3 were made with fixed slotted cylinder which attached to original spool spindle. This design became standard with FED-4 and FED-5.

A missing spindle will make even correct spools from the best supplier useless.

The slotted cylinder take-up may be easy to make. But your FED-3 may be missing parts like the coiled spring, the washers, and the large-head screw which allow the cylinder to function properly. These other parts allow it to reel with tension to take up film and then turn the other way easily to allow rewinding.

i have the spindle spring and screws and stuff all i think i am missing is the long cylinder. i emailed fedka and he said he probly dident have one. no body has the mesurements for the outer cylinder do they ? paticularly the inner diameter and the thickness

The slotted cylinder from the FED-5 will fit. This is similar to what you are missing.

hi i think my fed may be an export model as it has made in the ussr printed in english on the rear i have herd that such cameras had removeable take up spools if so would a spool for a fed 2 or somthing similar be appropriate?

The base where the spindles or takeup cylinders are attached is standard for all models. You can fit the spindle from a FED-2 or late FED-1 and all FED-2 spools will fit. You can even put a spindle from a Zorki there and make spools from Zorki or Leica fit. The slotted cylinders found in some FED-3, and all FED-4 and FED-5 are the same.
