When installing a Industar 61- M39 screw mount lens, should the lens be set at infinity or 1metre (or somewhere in between) before screwing it in? Just wondering if it matters.
Pretty much any screw mount lens should be at infinity when mounting. That moves the focus cam in the lens the furthest rearward so it has proper engagement with the focus follower in the camera.
i always set at 1m because then you have no chance to bend arm with helicoid. when you are in dark and change lens its easy to put it not fully straight and then if at infinity it can hit it sideways.
There are times I have set the lens at its close distance, if sometimes it seems to want to hang on the rangefinder follower cam. It all depends on the particular lens/camera lash-up if there are conflicts. I know a Leica lens will hang up on the follower in a FED.
