hi nick, i still don't have my canonet yet...sunday! sunday's the day! that's the reason why i got the canonet over the yashica...for it's manual override. i could do without the batteries.

Some devices had circuits whose efficiency depended on a stable supply of power. Mercury cells gave this- these put out a stable voltage throughout their working lives. Alkalines don't- their voltages drop and fluctuate. Circuits designed to be powered by alkalines have this considered.
This doesn't mean though that any mercury-powered device will falter if fed with alkalines. Some do and some don't care.
CdS meters often fail and cause inconsistent readings. I am sure however, that Yashica Electro cameras would work correctly even when powered with alkalines.
XTA- Silver cells put out a stable current. They are more expensive than alkalines.

JAY,
you have two J3's that are well-collimated?! ang suwerte mo naman!!! one is very hard to come by. and you have two! #$@! please let me know if you unloading one.
re: the I-61, thanks for the reassurance. i will feel content with that thought.
and about sunday ... you are not thinking of the expected mammoth rally in luneta huh? that will be an interesting chopsuey of political and religious persuasions.
Eddie: Annie has already attempted to do the same several times already. I repeat: the J-3's stay with me!
Meron rally on Sunday? Those sort of gatherings are not on top of my list though. I'm sure that there'd be plenty of other places to go to.
xta, I'm not sure the minolta has electronics capable of fixing the voltage difference between the 1.5v LR44 and/or SR44 and the 1.35v original mercury battery. I use 1.4v zinc oxide hearing aid batteries for my RFs. Congratulations on the two cameras, I'm still hoping for a Minolta 7SII some day. My Vivitar ES and Konica S3, tho supposedly "clones", don't have manual override.
I could be mistaken, but I think the regular alkaline PX28 batteries can also be used with the Yashica.
Doesn't the Yashica default to 1 speed without a batt? I'm not sure if it's 1/500 or 1/30--my memory fails me...
Retro, what's the plan on the 29th? I'm afraid I'm a corporate slave...work on that day.
Kat: The event on the 29th won't start early. So you corporate types can join- siguro late afternoon ang start.
The Yashica Electro cameras (both RF and SLR) used a special battery- its long and fat, (almost like an AA cell, but stubbier). Unlike other cameras and meters, they thrive on alkaline cells too. The default mechanical speed I think is 1/125. Thats what the technician I mention in a previous post did. He killed the circuits and set the camera to permanent mechanical stupor
Wam: Kainis talaga ang paghihintay sa day Zero, noh?

More Jupiter on RD-1s
More Jupiter on RD-1s
Inggitin ulit si Annie at Eddie hehehehe.....
Jupiter-3, available light. Kuha ni Medwin ng "Truefaith" during dinner after attending the opera at CCP
Shutter must have been at 1/15 sec, lens at f/1,5:
Jupiter-3, (picture is mislabelled Jupiter-9). Also at f/1.5 Scene from an adaptation of the opera "Magic Flute". Shot at the CCP, tonight:
Jupiter-9 (85mm) at f/2. Also from "Magic Flute":
And one BW shot using the Industar 61-L/D. Red "filter" setting, f/11 with studio strobes. The subject, host of "The Sib Show" on Jack TV happened to have walked into the studio to have some profile photos made. The built-in BW setting on the R-D1 is really amazing.

Oo nga Eddie. You have to fall in line. I called first dibs on Jay's J-3.
Jay, nice pics. I liked the bokeh on Medwyn's pic. What do you mean by "red filter setting" on the R-D1s? You didn't use a red filter on the lens? Or, did you adjust the channels in PS? Show some grain naman!
BTW, the last 2 pics were taken with the ZM 50mm Sonnar-C. I think pareho sila ng look ng J-3...

nice pics jay...kainggit! still waiting on my canonets. keeping my fingers crossed that it would reach my cousin's place on time before they leave for manila.
haaaay...i should've been introduced to the J3 earlier when it was cheaper. jay, the only time i saw one was when we hit hidalgo a few weeks back. i thought i'd be contented with the I61...well, i was, til i saw the J3!!!:bang:
kasalanana nanaman ni jay! hahahahaha. jay, sa party, ilabas mo na lahat ng options namin for lenses and accessories so we can decide early and which is which...hehehehe. right now, i'm happy with the Jupiter 9. the only focal length i have that's longer than my normal lenses. i hope i could still be happy with it as my only long lens even after the party...but i doubt it! :bang:

The J-3s go under lock and key on the 29th hehehe
Wam, isang gabi na lang! Bakit pala panay J-3? No one wants to go for the J-12 (35mm?) It's a fine wideangle for 35mm film, and great as a 'normal' lens on the R-D1s. I haven't used the J-12 much; in the past 3 days it has shot more pics on the Epson than in all of the 4 years it has been with me.
Annie: The Epson has a BW mode. Like other cameras with BW modes, it also has built in virtual filters- Yellow, Orange, Red, and Green. These settings would give BW pictures whose grey tones would simulate BW film pics shot through those filters. The picture posted is pretty much what the camera made. Hardly any PS adjustments were made, except for resizing and subsequent sharpening for the resized image. Puede siguro lagyan ng noise to simulate grain
Eddie: Bullet day? Yes, bite the bullet and BIN (buy it now) the next J-3 you see on eBay!
Ditoy: Thanks. The Epson is really a great toy. I was shooting with it again this morning. Chances are one of the shots will be used for the magazine's cover. That would be first- Digi RF with Russian lens!

jay,
getting a well-collimated J3 needs some bit of luck. they are quite notorious for inconsistency in quality. so it is not just biting the bullet, it is like playing russian roulette. i will have to recover from my major purchase of the rd1s before i gamble on ebay again. the last time i was lucky with the fed 3 that cost me only $7.50, plus $30 shipping cost from ukraine and the camera with the industar 61 is a fine shooter.
and, let me share some photos of a xmas concert in ateneo. all taken with available light at iso1600, with the nokton 50/1.5 and with the epson.

oops, i didn't mean to cut in line. nagbabakasakali lang.
those zeiss lenses have been catching my attention lately. you are not in the habit of having pairs of such lenses, do you? or will you be as treacherous as jay as to put them under lock and key on dec 29? (even if you are not going to the party).
oh by the way, i think the digital noise in one of the pictures taken by my rd1s which i just posted on this thread can (almost?) pass for grain.
pahabol ... i have a similar fan in my music/play/sex therapy room. the one that can cut off fingers of young kids or small members of adult males. (pardon my sick humor). nice shots. what lens did you use on the fan? i like that subdued light.

@ Jay: Congrats on the cover! Which magazine? I can't wait to see street photos from the R-D1s and see more results with the virtual filters. I tend to use yellow, yellow-green and yellow-orange when I shoot B/W. Regarding the J-12, do you compensate by -1EV? Here's the link to the tip about the J-12 and M7. I haven't used my J-12 yet.
@ Eddie: The fan is Jay's Kord fan and it's in his studio. The picture was taken with the Jay's J3 and my M7. The film I used was the NPH 400 (I think). The drapes are sheer so the lighting's good. The walls are painted a shade of green that reminded me of the colors from the movies Amelie and Long Engagement. Okay yung dating sa pics.
As for buying lenses in pairs - medyo guilty! It depends! Hehehe.
Regarding the last pic, I don't think the digital noise in the shadow areas could pass for grain. But then again, I'm not an expert.
@ Wam and Nick: Congrats on your RFs!
I hope you guys go for a walkabout... Christmas markets and fairs everywhere this time of year, right? The more rough and tumble the perya the better...pero sana they're safe to go to even just for pics.

For some distraction (para malimutan muna J-3
): attached below is a couple of Jupiter-12 (35mm/2.8) from yesterday's shoot. Sorry, no street shots yet, panay interior with studio strobes.
Eddie- it's always good to have two!
The Kord fan is still where Annie found it last year. Fan still works, though quite noisy.
Annie- I should try using real filters over the lens. Exposures? I never bothered to correct a la M7 with the J-12. Camera seems to give right exposures most of the time. BTW the R-D1s has a very primitive TTL metering system. It tends to over- or under-expose depending on what dominates the scene- for instance bright backgrounds will lead to underexposure most of the time.
Heto na ang attachments. Boys, please look at the BW picture objectively.

Jay,
Is that magenta cast on pic #1? Hehehe. Just teasing.
To me, the tones on pic #2 look better than your earlier B/W portraits taken with the R-D1s; more life-like.
I saw your recent pics in flickr as well - they all look good. Was the Spam and Whiskas pic taken with the J-9? Out of focus?

Jay, I like the Epson shots. Those kinds of shots pull me back to going digital, he he he.
As to the B&W pic of your second set, objectively speaking
, I'd say excellent tonal range. BTW, who is she?
Annie, unfortunately, I wasn't able to pick up the canonet last friday because of the anti-con ass rally here in Makati. It was therefore a "lost weekend". Will pick it up after lunch today.
Wam, are you enjoying yours?
