Film advance completely stuck?

My CL arrived yesterday i ran a roll through it and was completely happy with the results. However when i went to reload the film this morning my film advance lever would not move the shutter button was able to push in like the shutter wasn't cocked. I have posted the camera to the only Leica trained repair man at Cameratiks in edinburgh.

I had two questions.

1. Do you think they will be able to fix it?

2. Do you know if it was just bad luck or do you think i might have done something wrong unloading the camera?

If you have a button to push before rewinding the film, try pushing the button and, holding the button in, advance the film.

Unfortunately i had already packed up the camera and sent it for repair. I will be rather embarrassed if they do that and it works.

However thanks for the reply and i'll bear that in mind if i ever have any problems in the future!

Not sure what was entirely wrong with the camera but the repair guy found problems enough to cost me £96... i hope this camera comes back working.

I had a similar problem AFTER having my CL overhauled by Sherry. Advance jammed up on the very first roll of film at about 27 frames (It was a 36 exp roll). Sent the camera back to her, as she stands behind her work, and it arrived at her door working properly. Haven't had a problem since. Apparently mine just needed a trip back and forth in the mail to fix itself.

Sorry that my story doesn't help you identify the issue, but I'll surely be interested to hear what the issue was in your case.

I've asked for a breakdown of the problems, hopefully it will be stuff that is a one off as im not paying £96 after every roll. However i've heard of CL's that it was down to the way the film was loaded i.e if you didnt have the camera horizontal when you load it it would jam. However i'll post the results when i get them.

Sounds like a bit of old film broke off and worked into the gears. This happened with my M4 days after I sold it to a friend-- and though it had never happened with me, it was probably a bit of my film broken off during rewind that gummed up the advance. The repair bill was $90.

For the technician opening my CL seemed to be like opening pandoras box. After opening they:

1. Unjammed/reset the shutter
2. fixed inaccurate speeds
3. fixed the faulty meter

When sold the camera i was told that the meter would never work again... so i'm happy enough with the money i paid.

You got a working meter?! Lucky!
I was told its not feasible to fix an ailing meter in a CL. Mine "works" but gives incorrect readings. Yes, with the proper 1.35v mercury battery (I have a few left from the good ol' days 🙂 ). Unlike the original poster of this thread, I was sold mine as having a good meter. I've moved on, but my frustration upon receiving the camera was "rather high".

Enjoy that "new" CL. Small, good meter, topped with a nice lens...wonderful.

Exactly same problem and solution With my Cl.....It seems to be achronic and well kwown problem always dscribed😉

I'll have to do that to mine. Made the mistake of buying it in an auction on this site from an out of country seller, who just joined to sell it.
Mint condition, showed up jammed (and a big dent). I'll give it a good whack..

(It came with an ok condition Summicron 40 which is why I kept it)

Was this from Cameratiks in Edinburgh? My CL has the exact same Locked winder mechanism. I am based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Looking for a repair shop willing to look at it.

Thanks for this advice. it helped me... I was trying to figure out how to remove the take-up spool, I had the bottom plate removed down to the cam removed that cocks the shutter (release) as you wind the film. I wasn't thinking and cocked the shutter advance lever, and it wound the shutter curtains but didn't cock the shutter release(?) I cried... "OMG what have I done" I remembered you said you hit your camera and it worked... I tried it and it worked... THANK GOD

My expert repairer made a similar diagnosis in my M2. It jammed late in a roll. I got the film out in a dark bag and there was nothing wrong and it never happened again. My repairer's telephone advice was so reassuring.
