If I mount a 40mm lens on a leica M2 or M4, which framelines appear? The CV 40/1.4 seem s really interesting, but these cameras don't have 40mm framelines...

The CV 40/1.4 will bring up the 50mm framelines. But it can easily be modified to bring up the 35mm framelines. Many people opt for the modification. One major reason not to would be if you intended to use the lens on a CL or CLE at some point.

If you opt for a Rollei 40/2.8 Sonnar, it will bring up whatever frame tou want because it is LTM and the frame that appears will be determined by the M-adapter that you select. It is a superb lens especially for shooting people.

I didn't know this lens. But I'd prefer the nokton, because it's 2 stops brighter... Doesn't it exist in screw mount too?

Thanks, Rafael! Do you think that the 35mm fl are more comfortable to use? And why?

Try elastic band instead, from selector lever to the neck strap lug carry a spare, they will break when you need them.

I did this for years for my J12 until I bought a 35mm adapter...

Nice idea, never thought of that..

A small piece of card can be jammed behind the preview lever. Make it just thick enough to stop the lever moving but not enough to bend the lever outwards. I did this on an M with a sticky frameline selector and when I didn't have a 50mm M adapter for the CV Nokton I was using at the time.

thanks for the suggestions! really interesting.

another question: how do the 40mm fov matches with the 35mm framelines?

Open rear door and stick 3m tape across gate and see for self.

Pencil eraser or mouse mat foam can be used instead of cardboard the real advantage of the elastic band is if you use a neck strap the band is not going to get lost until it snaps...

I first got a CL and later bought an M4 body and the 40mm lens with this body is a combination I specially like. For me the 50mm framelines is the easiest to use. I just compose knwing that I will get a bit more that what it appear, in fact I can even quantify that by moving the framelines' selector half way and having both the 35mm and 50mm framelines appearing. A 40mm frameline would be just halfway.

I use a Rokkor 40 on my M7. It has been modified to bring up the 35mm frame lines. I compose within the the bright lines, and it is extremely accurate in framing. In many threads about the 35mm lens you will hear people complaining about how inaccurate the framelines are for the 35mm lens, but they are just right for the 40!
