Film on a Pedestal

I received a roll of Fuji Velvia ISO 50 from a old friend after a long talk about the quality of the lens in my Yashica GS.

I was commenting that I usually run basic cheapish film through my GS and that lens can make anything sparkle... I would love to see what it can do with a film such as Velvia ... 3 days later its in my camera.


That was two weeks ago!!! I have been terriblly slow about picking and choosing what shots I will take to test out this film. By this pace it will be a month before I finally send the film to be processed.

So my question is; is this normal?

How many here have a certain film that is not to be wasted and will often take more time to go through a single roll?

Should I not be putting the velvia on a pedestal? 🙄

Hum..no...there isn't a whole lot that is worth five bucks that I put on a pedestal.

Edit: I did forget that Velvia 50 got discontinued after the 100 version came out - so for that reason I can see how you are treaing it a bit more carfully 🙂

It depends. If it's a film which for some reason you cannot find easily then you should relish the opportunity and use it when and where it can deliver its optimum performance. I have a few remaining rolls of Agfa Ultra which I use very, very sparingly, like you do with the Velvia 50 (btw you can still find Velvia 50 in the UK). Come to think of it though, this summer I am also shooting my first and last of Kodachrome. With the Swiss lab closing, I will use whatever rolls I have real fast.

Ok so the Agfa Ultra and Kodachrome are on the endangered species list

I was not neccesarily talking expense, since the fuji instant film I use for my polaroid is 7 bucks for 10 shots... but I'll go through that like its going out of style

Yes, the summer heat can cause inertia and the instant feedback mentality from digicamming also makes us wonder why we wait for dev & processing of images.

It's normal for me because without a darkroom or scanner, good processing and scanning (and its cost) are issues.

Velvia is a fantastic film, and should be on a pedestal. However, just because it is on a pedestal, doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. After all, Velvia only shines when you expose and develop it.

Any roll of Agfa Agfapan 25 B&W. No longer in production. I have 2 in 120 left and am waiting for the right setting.

Kodachrome (64). Except it doesn't take more time to shoot it, I don't use it unless I have something in particular in mind to shoot with it. I don't use it for everyday stuff.

Velvia is not an all-purpose film, and will deliver the best results in certain situations. It's understandable that you want to get the best from it, but don't be afraid to use it, to explore a little.

Yes, it's discontinued film, but what does that matter? You risk heat damage and/or latent image loss if you take too long, not to mention you're tying up your camera, and missing a bunch of other shots you could be taking with your regular film(s).
