Film portraiture using only natural light

Australia, Cuba - after the Revolucíon triumphed in 1959, the government expropriated all the sugar mills and changed their names and the town name to different countries from their original American names. In 2002 the government "rationalized" the then money losing sugar industry by closing half of the sugar mills, including this one in Australia, to cannibalize them for parts to keep the remainder operating. The town of Australia has had no significant source of jobs since. Cubans are very patient. This woman sat on her bike in the shade just watching us from our arrival to departure some 45 minutes later.

I find natural light portraiture to be really challenging. Avoidance of that totally flat lighting on the face requires lighting directional control, difficult with only natural light. Without that, one typically ends up with nice snapshots.

I most commonly end up shooting inside using the window as a directional light source. Even shooting a subject in shadow illuminated by reflected sun light is difficult because the light source is so broad that the result appears flat.

That is the reason window lit studios were once so popular. Then modern artificial lighting eliminated the need for a studio facing the right direction, having no outside physical barriers to interfere with sunlight, and permitted photographing at all hours of the day or night.

Patience or fatalism?
