Eh, that's what a bottle opener is for.

film retrievers are a pain in the ass... the only time I got mine to work is when I did something completely different than what the instructions said and now I can't remember what I did

My M5s need red dots!
Well, I have a film retriever and it works every single time.

I have one too, and it works (after a fashion)... but ripping the top off the film canister is quicker, easier, and far more satisfying.

I used one of those cheap two piece aluminum ones for decades. All of a sudden it stopped working. I bought a fancy one like they use in the minilabs. It works one time in ten. Went back to a can opener .
Now using Leica brass cassettes which I load in total darkness with ABLON and bench winder. Works a treat.

Have to agree ...bottle openers are the way to go

I want to be able to switch films and have thought of buying a film retriever but I bend the end of my leader 90 degrees when I load it. Will a film retriever still work? I wonder about the increased resistance?

I have two, but they never seem to work for me. Bottle openers are so much quicker anyway.

What happens if both rolls are wound into the canister?...
This is like a party trick, not for practical use at all. Just use bottle openers or film pullers.

So what happens if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and have just wound the leader into the cassette? What happens if both rolls are wound into the canister?...

But it is a pretty good party trick.
