Film setting

Hi,

Could anybody tell me what are best film settings for black & white pictures ? and what monochrome filter for everyday photography ?

Not sure I completely understand your question. I routinely use a yellow filter on film camera lenses for B&W, though.

I was speaking aboiut R-D1 digital film settings. Not about films.

being digital, I find it is more convenient to apply post-processing on the PC. It gives more discretion than on the R-D1 itself.

I use standard mode set to BW + raw. No filter usually since it's digital as Flip says, except if I shoot colour jpeg in very bright light (UV filter). Using a yellow filter has not proved satisfactory as much as with film

I use green, but also shoot raw. Still, like the look. As for settings, contrast boosted all the way, saturation all the way down, edge enhance at the middle. I have to say, the JPEGs out of the epson are filled with info. I wish I knew the compression ratios, I'm sure their good.

Depends what you want or what you need. In my case I really love the normal settings with an 400 to up ISO with orange filter.
I love the 800 or 1600 ISO grain of the R-D1, look very natural and strong.

I prefer shooting raw when i have the time but the buffer is limited to 3 frames then instead of 8 or 9 for jpegs and the latters are very good in b&w so i choose usually normal settings, 400 iso & yellow filter. YMMV.

I'm glad the normal setting is approuved by the majority. That was my choice and there too much conbination to find the good one.

I dispense with digital filters when shooting RAW+JPEG colour. But with BW, depending on the skies really, I use yellow, orange or red.

I experiment with the jpgs at the moment. I really like, how the EPSON puts out black and white. I have not found the right processing, to get my RAW files to this look.

When shooting JPG though, make sure, you did not set the sharpening to the highest level. This will completely ruin high ISO shots (strong halos and digital color effects at edge).

When I plan, to use JPGs for later PP, I try to shoot less contrast, the least sharpening and and no noise reduction in camera.
