Hi folks,

I'll be in Sydney this week. Where is the cheapest place to pick up some Tri-X?

Also -- any tips on where I can find some good used-camera shops? I'm getting a GAS attack!

Alan

Foto Reisel on Kent Street (near the intersection with Market St) in the CBD has a fair stock of film, and a lot of camera bodies (with quite a few rangefinders). They're not enormously cheap, certainly not compared to Singapore or HK, but they certainly have quite a bit of stock.

There's also Mainline Photographics, the Aussie distributor for Voigtlander, but they're a bit further out, in Crows Nest. They've got some used gear, too -- there's an up-to-date list on their website.

Phototechnica

Best place in Sydney to get E6/C41 processing, all sizes/formats, and has a very good stock of refrigerated, fresh pro films including all Fuji Chrome films. There is another big lab called,

... but they are a bit harder to get to. Phototechnica is also conveniently close to Central Station, check the map on their website for directions or type their address into Google maps.

...might be worth giving a call if you strike any problems with finding Tri-X.

Not sure if you will want to get your Tri-X processed here in Australis but if so you will want to take it to;

Blanco Negro
72b Fitzroy Street
Surry Hills, NSW 2010

Sydney's best black and white film lab for both development and printing. Don't waste your time looking elsewhere these guys are the best! Only prob might be that they are closed over the Christmas break...?.... not sure, give them a call or email and check.

However be prepared to be shocked by the prices of Fuji Chrome/Neg films, and film in general, in Australia!

So if I was you, on the off chance you wanted to shoot any colour, I'd bring as much Fuji Chrome/Neg film as you can carry!!! And perhaps some for me??? :)

I would only go to Foto Riesel to check out the second hand gear... I always find they either never have the film I am after, or if they do, not the quantity. They do tend to have about as much second hand RF gear as you will ever see in Sydney in one shop....

Thanks guys.

You're right -- Foto Riesel is incredibly expensive for used cameras. But at least the service was pretty good. I was especially happy to see all the darkroom stuff in there -- it's pretty hard locating them in Singapore in this digital age!

Anyway, I picked up some TMax 400 at Ted's. At $12, it was about 3 times what I would pay in Singapore. But little choice there -- I was out of film. Should have packed more rolls.

Hope you guys had a great time at New Years!

Yup, film is getting more and more expensive here, sadly. I've been buying from an excellent ebay seller (cheapshots-au) or Megaperls, lately. At least Ted's still stock bags of xtol. :)
