Filson Oil Finish field bag on sale

Thanks. Often I'm not impressed by bag suggestions, but this one looks very nice and simple. Perfect for a variety of gear options. I've placed my order....

I'd never heard of Filson and just spent several hours browsing their website :)
I like some of their coats... it's tempting. Hopefully I'll be in NYC again later in the year and will stop by their store.

What insert/divider system are you using with yours?

If it's proper Cornish Tin Cloth, the finish is quite hard to rub off, and suitably water resistant.

Nice looking bag too - I wonder if that's available in the UK at that price?

rscheffler, I picked up a slightly used ape case divider off amazon that is 10.25X7X7 I still have room on the 10.25 side for a water bottle, The bag is quite big (for me)

If the bag doesn't work out just send it back, Filson has a great return policy :)

Not sure about an oil finish... sounds like some waxy coating that could get transferred by handling...

The bag is oily, It feels almost wet, I rubbed a uv filter on it and noticed a slight smudge, Since the bag came with a tin of oil finish I assume with will fade over time so Ill just deal with it, Maybe just oil the top of the outer flap.

That's one thing the Billinghams have going for them, they are really waterproof without further treatment etc. These are nice looking bags though, interesting with the shoulder strap fixed to the bag in the way of the M-bag or BBB-bag.

Good point, I have never owned a Billingham, is the material hard and stiff? The canvas on the filson is very soft and thin. Perhaps that's part of the trade off.

I can only talk about the classic version, which is canvas and waterproofed (basically a two layer fabric with the waterproofing inside.) Not stiff at all. Then there is the newer "Fibernyte", which I have never seen or handled in person. Its claim to faim is that it is 10 or so percent lighter, and supposedly even more rugged.
What makes a Billingham potentially unwieldy is simply the padding/divider it comes with. They are of good quality though, and I liked it very much. (I sold my Billingham recently because I was changing systems.) As with any bag with substantial padding/insert, a Billingham will not hug that much to your body.
But that is a general design philosophy, or a matter of taste on behalf of the user.
What really, really works on Billinghams is the fastening system via leather straps and brass buckles. I was skeptical at first, but it is totally quiet, reliable, can be opened and closed with one hand.

But as I said, this bag looks very nice, and if I were in the US, I would jump on the offer.

Shane, thanks...
I'm about to buy a new bag.. and this looked a nice alternative until I noticed the oil finish and mention of re-proofing wax,
Knowing how many fingerprints I already wipe off the VF window this could add to it.

Shane - thanks for answering my insert question. I have a few things from Domke kicking around that will probably work. As an alternative, I might get Eric at CourierWare to customize one of his camera inserts for it, but kind of want to avoid putting anything too padded and rigid in it.

I will probably use it to carry a smaller customized CourierWare bag carrying my M kit along with other odds and ends while traveling. On its own, it'll be bigger than I'd want for just going out with my M kit. But it looks nice and I couldn't resist at that price. :) I'm sure I can find a use for it!

Another question - the interior is lined with a different material, right? That's how it looks in their product photos and I think is what I read, too..

I ended up playing it conservatively with black, but the Otter Green also looks nice. Which color did you get?

In a UTube video about this bag, the vendor who made the video indicated the bag ships with a package of the wax. Was it included with yours?

Regarding the design of the strap and similarity to the BBB bag... this is something I also noticed, though when I'm out shooting I often like to flip the flap back behind the bag and keep the top open. It doesn't appear to be a doable thing with this one, but isn't a deal breaker.

As for the Nylon buckles - I suspect since this bag is intended for use in wet conditions, it will endure such weather better over the long run than leather details/trim. I find it also looks a bit more casual this way and not 'trendy' the way the regular style, or a Billingham, does. Thus, slightly more discreet.

Yes the interior is lined, the material is a smooth nylon I got Otter Green, The interior lining is a lighter shade of green.

As for tucking the flap behind the bag, Yes you can totally do that, The strap kinda pinches it, but the top flap is so soft and broken in feeling its not really a problem :)

The Nylon buckles are kinda weird, I'm getting used to them. Opening one handed is a breeze, Closing is more of a two handed affair.

Thanks for all the great Billingham info :)

Love their tin cloth. I have vest and coat that has over 15 years steady wear on it and it still looks about the same as it did when I bought it. Never owned one of their bags though.

Shane, could we see a photo of the bag with the divider and gear to get a enter idea of size/fit?

Thanks!
