filter on 50mm lens for mamiya 7?

hello there,

i want to get a good quality skylight filter for the 50mm lens for my mamiya 7. it feels like ive been gambling the past two years, with dropping it, or with getting dirt on the lens. plus with a filter i would likely leave the lens cap off, preventing wasted shots. :bang:

however, i am wondering if a regular filter -- say a standard b+w filter with brass ring -- might cause vignetting? should i go for one of b+w's slim models instead?

I only have a Hoya HMC 81B (chrome on overcast days) and a B&W K2 (yellow). They are both standard filters. Neither vignettes on the 50mm lens on my Mamiya 7. .

I use a normal filter on both the 50mm and 43mm on my Mamiya 7. Slim not needed, I'd say.

thanks very much everyone. i had a feeling it would be okay, by the shape of the factory hood, but just wanted to be sure... good filters arent exactly cheap!

Regular filters are fine on the 43mm so stop worrying...

i have a related question: does anyone have experience with using a 62mm filter + step-down ring on the Mamiya7 50 mm lens (which has a 67mm filter thread) - do i have to expect vignetting or would that combination be still OK?

I think that would be pushing your luck (sorry no experience on this particular combination). It's not only the reduced diameter but also the added thickness with the step-down ring.

I've used standard B&W filters and not a trace of vignetting. Its only a 24mm equiv.

You mean a 62mm filter on a 67mm lens?

Well, I will try it tomorrow and let you know - maybe I'm lucky 😉
