Filter size for LH-2 hood?

Greetings,

Trying to standardize things in my kit. I recently picked up a LH-2 lens hood for my CV f2.5 35mm and noticed that it has threads inside the hood for a filter. The lens itself takes 39mm filters but the diameter of this threaded ring is larger.

I tried looking for specs on this hood via Cameraquest and the Cosina websites but can find nothing about mounting a filter in the hood. Does anyone know the diameter of this mounting ring?

FWIW I'm using adapters and Series VI filters on my lenses at this point but want to get more modern coated filters. I want to minimize the number of filters of the same type but different diameters. If this is 40.5mm then I would be really happy because I have multiple lenses that take this size.

If it is like the LH-1 that I have and you are talking about the Colour Skopar C 35mm f2.5, you first unscrew the lens hood that came with the lens (just as you would to attach a 39mm filter). You then tighten the adjusting screw on the LH-2 hood and screw it on in the place of the original hood and if using a 39mm filter add it before you screw in the LH-2 hood. Once the hood is in place loosen the adjusting screw on the hood to align it properly to avoid vignetting and retighten the adjusting screw.

Hey Bob,

Guess I should take a close up digital shot of the LH-2. When looking at the hood from the front there is a _second_ threaded ring inside that is larger in diameter than 39mm. I'm guessing that a filter can be threaded into the base of the front of the hood instead of/as well as the 39mm filter in the front of the lens.

I see what you are getting at but no mention is made in the instruction sheet as to if that is possible. I just use a 39mm filter on my 21 VC which is the same filter size for my 90 tele elmarit. The only draw back to threading in a larger filter into the hood itself is that the filter is further forward and might contribute more to flare. The easy way to find out might to email Mr. Gandy directly.

i would think that would make for some poor photos as the filter is too far from the lens front.

on my canon hood for the 85/2 there are some threads on the front and it turns out that it fits the metal screw in lens cap i have (48mm). kinda cool actually.

I agree with back alley... No point in putting a filter on the front of a lens hood. It negates the whole point of putting a hood on in the first place. It will cause flare and reflections between the filter and the front element. Also, due to the distance between the lens and the filter, any dust etc on the filter may become visible.

OK...the threads are NOT at the front of the hood. The threads are at the base of the hood. There is a ring that threads on to the outside of the lens. Inside the ring at the bottom of the hood is another threaded part that is larger than the 39mm filter diameter of the lens.

Oh heck, I should just order a 40.5mm filter and try it. I made my rounds of the local shops and cannot find anything in 39mm or 40.5mm.

Ahh! I've just taken a close look at my LH-1 hood and see that its got the same thread. I guess its 40.5mm

It might be a bit tricky getting filters in and out of there. You would need to have pretty small fingers. Especially if the filter gets screwed in tight.

I can see one other slight problem with this thread. If you screw a 39mm filter onto the lens and also have a filter on the hood, when you screw the hood to the lens, the rim of the 39mm filter will clash with the filter on the hood and may crack it.

Hey Pete,

My thinking is that I won't bother getting 39mm filters. Right now I'm using various adapters and Series VI filters and hoods. I want to use the factory hoods so that means going for threaded filters.

I have multiple lenses that take 40.5mm filters but only one that takes 39mm. If I can use the 40.5 in the LH-2 hood then I'd be set for standardization.

Unfortunately none of the local camera shops has filters for B&W in that size. One guy even told me good luck because B&W is dead....right. So I've got to order over the 'net.

Hi Greg,

My situation is a bit different. I deliberately chose my lenses so that they all use 39mm.

39.5mm and 40.5mm filters are a bit difficult to find. B+W, Hoya and Heliopan all produce them, but you may have to order them over the net. A good camera shop will order them in for you.

That's just reminded me... I'm sure I've got a 40.5mm infrared filter somewhere... If I can find it I could put it on the LH-1 hood and try some infrared photography with my 25mm lens!!!
