The early 5cm f1.4 Nikkor rims measure 45mm, as do the 13.5cm and 3.5/f2.5 Nikkors. The later 5cm f1.4 Nikkors measure 46. Thicker rims and less prone to damage.
But consider that early 135s used reversing hoods and reverse-threaded caps, the exterior dimensions may not have been an issue. Later, every lens came with the snap-ons, so, again, not an issue. It does seem a little strange that the accessory lenses kept to a narrower diameter.

I wondered if it had changed over time. Regardless, I use the snap on caps

There are obviously differences between mounts and versions of the 8.5 cm f1.5.
Which mount is your's in - I guess Nikon S mount?
My v1 LTM mount has a 58mm filter size. I have the bayonet hooded version (two guide pins outside of the front rim).

Hi menos, Yes you are right. The lens in a picture is made for Nikon S mount.

Could anyone tell me what size of filter and lens cap fits the LTM version of the 35mm f3.5 Nikkor.
Also would a Leitz A36 lens cap fit the lens as Nikon lens caps seem impossible to find.
Many thanks,

If your 35/3.5 has filter threads, it's the impossible 34.5mm variety.
A36 fits.

For what it's worth: I have a 5cm f1.4 Nikkor lens in LTM with 43mm diameter 0.50mm pitch threads. I have found that most of my attachments with 0.75mm pitch threads will will fit perfectly. I don't know about any other lenses.
A bit of trivia: I have a Kenko filter that according to the engraving on the rim has a diameter of 45.4. Well it has--overall. However, the threads are 43mm diameter 0.50 pitch. Sort like the two Kodak German filters marked 60mm. They have 58mm threads.
Would you have passed these filters up as the "wrong" size? Hopefully in the future you won't.
