Filtering Canon LTM lenses

Has anyone had any success in "making" a UV/IR filter for their Canon lenses with 40mm threads?

I'm thinking of getting a Marumi Cut Filter in 40.5mm and taking the glass out then putting it in a 40mm filter for my 35mm f/2 which does have a decent amount of vignetting.

As It's winter I've noticed up in the northeast US (Philadelphia & NYC) that there are a LOT of folks bundled up in black coats that are reflecting a good amount of IR.

For now I'm shooting B&W which negates the problem, but would like to get some color shots under my belt.

No lens coding so far and my filters are on the way from Leica.

Maybe I'm missing the whole gist of your question, but why not buy a simple 40mm-40.5mm step up ring and use the 40.5mm filter?

When I was testing UV/IR filters on my 28/2.8, I used a 40-43 step up filter with BW 43 UV/IR filter, then a 43 hood. Worked well, no vignetting and almost no flare.

With IR R72, I used a 46 (since that's what I had), with step up filters, and no hood (but used hand sometimes.

I did try a Walz 40mm blue filter (thanks to an RFF'er - xmas present) and while it fit and let me use the original cap, I still needed a hood or use of hand to prevent flare when shooting towards the sun.

I think the many types of step up rings and 3rd party filters out there work pretty well.

Using a hood stacked on top of a filter and a step up ring causes a bit of vignetting in the smaller apertures (unless I can find the OEM clamp on Canon hood). I feel that the 35mm f/2 is a great little lens but even with the deep element, is prone to flare so I always keep a hood on it. I'm still trying to figure out a way to adapt a filter+step-up ring so I can use my 12585 on the lens & have it securely clamp on.

Thanks for the step-up ring solution. I was thinking along the lines of 40mm and 40.5mm not even bothering to consider a step up ring and slightly larger hood.
