I use a metal wide angle hood made for the Olympus OM series (49 mm thread) together with a 48-49 mm step-up ring.
Very interesting. Do you have a picture of that set-up?
Erik.

The set up I suggest is smaller (less blocking of the viewfinder) and is "all rangefinder Nikon". The downside is the fact that the black two-piece shade is so hard to find.
Would it also be possible to fit a lens cap on yours ?
I wonder why Nikon never ventured very far with the "inverted lens hood type".
Personally I use a 51mm cap that slips in the hood, like a cork in a wine-bottle. A small cord is attached to pull it out quickly.
I would love to see that 51mm "slip-in" cap. Great idea.
Like this.
So here is at last another photo of my generic vintage "48mm Japan" metal hood. Looks pretty neat uh ?
Yes. No vignetting. FWIW that hood barrel is just a bit shorter than the Nikon hood combo made by Erik.Have you checked for vignetting ?

This is a generic "no name" hood and I guess it was made very long ago, when 48mm filter threads was less a rare standard than what it is now. I found it by chance on the 'bay some years ago for a song.Cool. Who manufactures these hoods ?
