Here's my latest info:

the camera, 35mm lens and hood total $2212

money collected = $825(popflash) + $1785(paypal) = $2610

gross surplus = $400

Tony will cover the shipping (info from Josh)

Joe will require $200 for taxes/customs to make everything legit

net surplus = $200

I spoke with Jorge, and he says that at the moment the RFF site is okay.

I'm thinking that the $200 extra should go to Joe for a filter and some film.

What do you guys think?

Perhaps he'd like a case from Luigi? Maybe for the extra you could ask for his input?

how about the lens hood? those Zeiss hoods aren't cheap and I know I'd want one if I picked up a Zeiss lens

I'm gone two or three days and I come back to find all this hullaballoo about a thread Joe's not supposed to read, and then a thread Brett doesn't want anyone to read... What's the world coming to! 😱

My vote goes to the hood. And you guys are admirable! 🙂

I'll keep reading... But you guys are a force to reckon with! 😀

A lens hood is already covered. The ~$200 extra needs to be for something else.

I just read in another thread that Frank said Joe told him he wasn't fond of cases. Perhaps he could use another bag? Tripod? Actually, unless he already has one, he needs a LTM to M adaptor. Also, wasn't he in need of a finder (was it 35mm?)?

Yep, we'll get the filter from Tony, and lens adaptors and film if Tony sells that stuff.

Joe isn't into cases. Lens hood is covered.

🙂

AFAIK, all $ was sent as a gift for Joe in appreication of Joe. If I knew my [nickel] contribution was part of the surplus, I'd want it to go to Joe along with everyone else's contribution and he can use it for whatever. IMHO.

edit: P.S. ~ great work everybody!

As much as I like the surprise gift donations I'm getting a little concerned. Money is driving people crazy. The idea was for a camera and lens, which we got. The surplus is also paying for shipping/customs/whatnot. The remaining surplus was supposed to go to RFF. Let's just do that. And if Jorge really disagrees with that than hold a poll to send the money to an international charity. IMO we're wasting money by buying film and hoods and cases and all.

Amen, RML. If we can't give $200 to RFF, why don't we find something equally admirable to give it to? Joe's got his camera and lens, which is what we were sort of hoping to achieve when this started, right? So let's see what else we can do for this community with the money.

Okay, being new here I will most likely get in trouble for this but... I have given to 4 charities in the last 6 months (that I recall) the donation I gave here was for Joe - I don't see a problem with the total going to him.

Scott, I'm not going to argue with you over this. I donate to charities too, and I donated here for the camera and lens.

If the prevailing feeling is to give all of the money to Joe than just stick the surplus in an envelop and give that to Joe. Let him decide what to do with the money. If he wants to donate it to a charity he at least can do so.

Really, I think we're too eager to buy things. It's got nothing to do with the initial gift idea anymore and it's turning into a form of GAS. "We got money so let's spend it", the attitude is becoming. I don't like it. It disgusts me. For me it soils the initial idea to no end. I almost feel dirty now for having donated. I'm sorry but that's the way I feel it.

Rml,
I am sorry, completely misunderstood your post. I have to admit that I almost wrote a post earlier saying what I believe you are saying now, it did seem like people were going on a "spending spree" nothing wrong with that, mind you, just seemed like it was more for them than Joe - if you know what I mean. My response to your post was based on the interpretation (on my part) that you thought Joe had received what he deserved and the rest could be put to better use elsewhere, I should not have so freely interpreted your post.

I gave my donation freely for a "good cause". Good causes in this case are Joe for his excellent service, RFF for just being the best and any of the thousands of charities that exist. I gave FrankS my full support in deciding what to do with any surplus and he still has it. If asked we will all have our views and they will be different and may even cause some strong feelings. If it goes to any of my "good causes" I'll be happy. Let FrankS decide, support him fully in this and leave our own desires and prejudices aside. Lets not spoil what has been a tremendous example of the spirit of this community by petty bickering.

My two pennies worth.

Regards

Gid

Here's what I think the best solution would be, considering that it would make everyone happy.

Give all the surplus to Joe in an envelope, just like RML said, and let him decide what to do with it. He can do whatever he wants. Give it to the site, give it to charity, buy some film and filters, or whatever he wants. Then none of us would have to fight over what should be done with it.

Sounds good to me.

Scott, no problem. I took no offense and understood your post for what it was. I was perhaps not so eloquent. That can happen. English is only my second language. 🙂

How about putting it in a contest fund?

It could be a simple contest, one a month; best photo gets a brick of film.
There's a lot of people on the site who would like a contest like that I think, and it could give some of the younger members a chance to explore new films a brick at a time.

For that matter, isn't there anybody at all who can take it across the border? I assume if the camera is used for even a single roll of film by somebody, it will count as used, and not be subject to duty. I'm not an expert in these things, but there's always a legal way to get around the law.

If I lived closer to Canada, I'd be happy to do it, however it would probablly cost me more than $200 to do the whole trip, it wouldn't be worth it. I seem to remember there are some established members who live in Niagara Falls, Port Townsend, and the like.....

Frank - whatever you decide is fine with me. There's a lot of good causes in the world, including this place. We all trusted you (and Ray and Tony) to bring our contributions together for our gift to Joe, and I reckon we can trust you to decide a worthy use for any surplus. Thanks for suggesting it, for seeing it through. And a big thanks to all members of this community for making it happen - you have something here you can all be proud of being a part of.
