Finally a lens for my Mamiya 7II

Yes, [yes]terday morning (19 Sept) i received my lens from FedEx, it is 65mm, i ordered it from ebay for first time, so this lens was my first item ever bought from ebay, and it came as described [New], but i didn't test/use it yet, so how can i be sure it is really New [the seller stated it as New]? I don't want to have an issue after a while due to not knowing how to test or configure the condition of the lens.

Congrats on your purchase.
Have a look at the lens, at the body and glass. If it is new, it should have 0 marks or dust etc.

The best way to test it is to go out and shoot.

Congrats, and yup, use it! Mamiya 7 uses lens shutter so the lens is really the center piece of the whole system. And don't worry if you can't release dry fire. If Mamiya hasn't changed it with M7II, you have to have a film loaded to trip the shutter. Alternatively, you can open the back door and trip the shutter w/o film. But yeah, run a roll or two. 🙂

I am now wanting to shoot a film, but i don't know how, because the time is bad
The time is night, so it is dark outside, i will test the film as always indoor in our house, the light is low anyway, weak not strong to use f8 or shutter speed minimum 1/30 at least, and the film i will use for test is Tri-X 400, what i can do here then, any tips?
I was going to use the camera handheld, so that, if with tripod then i can use any shutter speed slow, but with handheld i prefer to use minimum 1/60 even not 1/30-1/50 even i am steady.

I asked a question on a forum [APUG] about how to push it, and the answer confused me more and more, so i asked here to see if i can have clearer answer or i can understand the method

so should i set the camera at 1600? or set the camera at 400 and shoot at 400, then later develop for 1600?

Set the camera at 1600. Think and shoot the roll as if you bought and loaded a "1600" film. When you develop it, see Massive Dev Chart (http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php) for Tri-X @ 1600 developing time for the developer you use. (Basically, you are increasing developing time.)

If you are dropping off the roll at a lab, tell them you pushed 2 stops.

TareqPhoto, I agree with Sug. I personally use HP5 and shoot at 1600 for medium format as the lens tend to be f3.5 or f4. For my development time I add 20% for each stop. So for example, I use Rodinal 1:50 for 14 min semi stand for normal processing. @1600, I just developed it at 20 min and so far the result is pretty good. I am not a pro, but this works for me. Good luck.

I see, so this is the method, and why people don't answer this way making it simple? i thought it is complicated and i have either do with camera or with developing, so it is like i have to forget that i use iso 400 film and set the camera and shoot as it is 1600 and develop it for pushing at 1600, this i can understand and can do, damn when others answer it in long moving circle or confusing way.

I teach design and photography basics as a tutor or consultation basis time to time. KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) method works best for pretty much anything including describing things. 🙂

And really i prefer this method of teaching or explanation if applicable, in the chatroom i asked how i can shoot this film at higher iso and do push film, someone asking me these: why not use tripod? why handheld? why you want to push? you will get underexposed shots, you will uprate, you will see contrast and so.... ok ok, i know, but i want to learn what is pushing film and how to do it, i want to learn how to use the lens in tough conditions, i will use this camera and lens for travel for first time and many times i will use it handheld and not sure i can use tripod everywhere anytime there, so that i was going to test this film for the lens and using push method, at least using one film for both tests will save me a bit than using 2 films, at the end i will keep asking about how to push, then if i get same these answers then how can i learn about push film and when to use it.
I think he thought i may need the film or print it so no need to waste it for film, also think why going improper way for test, in all cases even i can use the film with tripod and get proper normal way, i have to learn and try push method, and i know that i don't shoot much film these days and i may get busy until the time i travel and i still didn't try this method, so i said it is better to do it now to have an idea about it and see how it works, some people think we are just crazy thinking different ways or not doing it straight forward normal.

Strange, i faced a problem or issue and i don't know why is that.
Today i was with a friend, went to a cafe, during talking to each other there i planned to shoot him with the camera and the lens, the camera doesn't respond, i try again and again, but then the shutter was firing i think only 2 or 3 times, and the rest didn't fire, and when i turn off the camera on most of the frame and then turn it on again the shutter or the shot is done, and i wind-up the lever, it is like i didn't take a shot and just blank by turning on/off, so what is the problem? on the viewfinder i see red light and the numbers, i thought maybe i chose wrong number of shutter speed so i choose the other number i see it blinking in red, again didn't work, i think the film is burnt as i open the lens at the last frame, so it is affected for some frames if not all, but i don't know if i should develop this film if it didn't shoot anything properly, what is the problem? I hope it is not that lens i bought that is not working or it is defective and not working, i am waiting your answers about it.
