Finally! An uncoated 90mm for me.

I've been quite good, setting myself a low limit for a pre-war 90mm Elmar, and today I finally succeeded, getting one for the bargain price of US$63, shipped from England. Of course, it might turn out to be crap, but from the description it's a typical nicely-worn example, just how I like them.

I can't wait to give it a go.

These are great lenses for the money. Their small size allows longer hand-help photos, and the overall photo quality is nice with the Elmars.

I really like the results I get from mine as well. THat is about what I paid for mine, but then it needed some work after I abused it. works great now, and feels good too.

It has been a long wait!

When faced with the decision to let one of my 9cm/4 Elmar's go, I kept the pre-war uncoated lens.

Congrats on finally landing an uncoated 9cm Elmar. They are capable of taking outstanding pictures and like Brian, if I had to give up one of my Elmars, it would be the coated one that goes.

Which type is coated and which uncoated? I have two very old ones; black and chrome. Is it the filter size that was changed at one stage?

Raid, as far as I know, all of the black 9cm/90mm Elmars are uncoated. They will have the distance scale on the a chrome band of the focusing collar. I don't believe any of the black Elmars are coated unless done at a later time OR possibly made for military use pre-war or during the war. I think military optics during WW2 were coated in some instances but I can't say that Elmars were for certain. I do have a Summar 5cm lens that's coated but when it was done is not known.

After WW2, Leitz began production of chrome 9cm/90mm Elmars and they were all coated to the best of my knowledge. Both my black and my chrome (coated) Elmar take the same A-36 filters. I'm not familiar with later M-mount Elmars that may have different filter threads.

Also, Leitz continued production of the black Hektor 135mm lens after the war and my 1947 Hektor is factory coated. My pre-war Hektor is not coated. I also have a chrome 135mm Hektor and, of course, it's coated too.
