Was going to buy a s3 2000 but this one came up an olympic missed out on a 35mm 1.8 but for the time being until i get a few rolls shot the f3.5 will do, first impressions it feel totally different from a Leica feels about half the weight of my M2 but I do like the ergonomics and it feels really usable.

Yes. I think the only lenses that work with the infinity lock are the 5cm (50mm) lenses and the rare 2.5cm f/4 lens.

I like that black-barrel 3.5cm f/3.5 lens. I have an older brass and chrome model that is fun but heavy.

All the external mount lenses for S-mount that I've owned, including a 2.5cm F4 and 5cm F1.1, have disabled the infinity lock. Looking at the design of the external mount, I don't see how it would be possible for an external mount lens not to disable the infinity lock. With the 2.5cm F4, you do focus using the little focus wheel in front of the shutter release but the infinity lock is disengaged.
 
I am not lucky enough to have one of the 5cm f/1.1 lenses but you are right regarding external mount lenses. I forgot about that one external mount 5cm lens.

I probably misspoke about the 2.5cm lens. It has its own infinity lock. At least mine does.

Regardless, the 3.5cm lens doesn't lock @ infinity....
 
Fraser, keep in mind the March as a Nikon Rangefinder month too. The 35f3.5 is not a bad lens - the later black barrel works fine - on par with a Leica Summaron 35mm f3.5 - and it is very small and compact too. Stock up on film and get ready for March.
 
Cheers everyone, Tom A I've had a roll of trix through it today the lens seems to be ok lower contrast than my Summicrons but still quite sharp, going to try it with some colour in the next couple of days see whats thats like.

My Olympic #6320079 with a SP 2005 35mm f1.8 on it. I like the S3 with the 35's - not a perfect finder, but then I am not a perfect shooter - and you can always crop! This is most likely my most used Nikon Rf. Very quiet, tactile and, yes, it looks damned cool too.
Hey, maybe a sub forum for Olympic S3's during Nikon Rf month?

I myself can feel the spring slowly emerging, and see March right around the corner. My S3 is just aching to get back out after a long winter of dormancy (just cannot get myself to really shoot during the long, gray Seattle winters, although this past one wasn't too bad).

Congrats! One cool thing about the Olympic is its titanium shutter curtains. No need to worry about accidentally burning a hole in the curtains, unlike those silly film Leicas with their cloth curtains 😀 (of which I have several 😱).

Ohh that's right. I forgot about the 2.5cm's inbuilt infinity lock. It works like a click stop on an aperture selection dial, right? Just strong enough that the optical cell locks at infinity but when focusing can be easily moved away from infinity using the focus wheel.

My Nikon SP is in need of a bit of a workout! So, alright then 😎
 
The problem in the uk is getting hold of lenses and bodies plenty of leica stuff but until I had bought my camera the only other Nikon I had handled was an s, I don't think they were very popular in the uk at all when they were new in the 50s and 60s.

You need to watch the new listings as they get snapped up due to pricing. They have an SP (cloth) for around £500 not mint obviously but with 50mm f1.4 which is very good pricing for UK.

I am worried about this years month, the lenses have curiously multiplied over the year 🙄 so I will really have to apply myself to the task, I need a game strategy.
 
Well done! You have a nice camera there, and if it's the one I think it is, you got a very good deal.

Although it can be tricky to find Nikon rf kit in the UK compared to the US and Japan, it's a lot easier now, thanks to the internet, than it was 15 + years ago. A bit of patience and you'll find what you want no doubt.
