Finally I got an SP original.

I have 1 from that serial # batch, but never looked to see whether it has the F features. Will have to take a closer look next time I use it.

I briefly owned a very late SP from the batch of around 1,000 cameras with serial numbers starting with 623****, and have handled several others.

. . .

All these SPs have Nikon F features such as flat self timer, longer more robust film advance lever, later ISO dial, rewind crank with rotating tip, 7-ring cover for the film counter etc. This batch of SPs was the first batch of SP reissues!!!

Actually the key feature for that last batch of SPs is the flat selftimer lever.
The previous batch (which could have been the last one) SPs had all those Nikon F features but for the selftimer lever which was still knurled.

Funny thing is that the Nikon Fs of the first batch hadn't that flat selftimer lever, but a knurled one like the SPs of the previous batch.
And a cloth shutter.

Once the Nikon F was produced, seems Nikon SP's parts got mixed together. Look at this thread Jon started:

The SP, being a Pro Camera is one of the models Nikon upgraded as the production continued. Just like they upgraded the firmware on their last Nikon film camera, the F6

Not true. the first F's had a unique self timer with sharp edges and slanted (not vertical) lines. If you saw an early F with the SP self timer, someone interchanged parts. It did not leave the factory like that.

If I wasn't already far down the Leica M rabbit hole, I could really see going into the Nikon RF world. Yummy.
