Finally! Nokton 50/1.5 in M-mount

I do not like the shade that comes with the lens, as usual with CV-lenses. The shade is too short and blocks the viewfinder.
The information that comes with the lens tells you that the lens is fitted with a "standard" shade. This suggest that other shades will be available.

The groove looks too narrow and shallow for a clamp on shade. at the same time, a clamp on shade won't be cheap.

Yes, you may be right, I just found out that this groove is in fact copied from the original lens from the fifties and is only decorative. Nevertheless I hope that Cosina will bring out a better shade. I would like a strict cylindric shade in black hammertone, not conical or vented, so that it will be as small as possible.

Mine weights 299 gr., wich is not much for a brass lens of this size.

I think I'll get the chrome - the extra weight is not going to bother me compared to any of the Nikon DSLR gear I've carried. It also looks nice and, in comparison to other CV lenses I've owned, I'm not a huge fan of loss of the black paint that's used on the lenses.

I absolutely love the rendering of this lens. Definitely kills the CV 35 f/2.5. I may pick one of these up when they start hitting the used market and my Canon 50mm Serenar craps out.
 
I have seen several results from it and I think it delivers outstanding performance for such a price. Zeiss and cron really has a competition now. However, this is just me, and I havent seen the lens in person, but from the pics, the cosmetic design of the lens looks busy and complicated for me.. Perhaps I will change my mind when I see one..
 
I'm a bit concerned with the CV purple fringing I've been seeing on photos posted. As a film lens looks great, sharp enough, some 'character', nice mount and price, but not sure I need another lens that is a compromise on my M9.

do you have references to this purple fringing? What cameras is it demonstrated on so far? Would the sensor size be a factor?

I'm still a film user, but do expect to get something digital (other than cell phone) before long….

Got mine....what a great improvement it seems to be over the first version. I've seen where they say it has a slight change in the formula, but that slight change made for a great improvement in sharpness and bokeh if you ask me. I have also seen some say it has similar look to pre-ASPH 50 f/1.4 but I don't think so at all. Wide open in the center the Nokton is very sharp at all distances. The pre-ASPH is NOT. The pre-ASPH also has more of a swirl to the bokeh. The Nokton is far more modern looking and dare I say, resembles the ASPH a lot more than the pre-ASPH. The corner to corner sharpness isn't quite up to the ASPH (more than good enough, though), but stopped down it is VERY close in sharpness to the ASPH. Distortion is definitely there, though nothing LR4/LR5 can't fix. Fringing is not an issue, see wide open examples below with NO CA adjustments done. All shots on M9

Comparing it with the summilux asph...wow...I'm impressed...

certainly a lens I will consider sooner or later.
 
A few more things I have noticed. CA is better controlled than the first version and flare control is MUCH better. Coatings are definitely improved. Bokeh wide open at close range is excellent, about 10 feet away I find the background very busy. The sharpness in center wide open is excellent at near distance, at infinity not as good. I would say at close distance it renders very much like the Lux ASPH, at mid distance back the Lux ASPH just kills it in sharpness and smoothness in oof areas. This lens is MUCH sharper than pre-ASPH in every situation

compare the mid corners of the Nokton with the 'lux ASPH 10m back please. I feel the Nokton's infinity performance is optimized to be as even wide open as possible.

The comparison I'd like comment on is with the zm sonnar c. I am wondering whether I can justify adding this new lens.
