Firefox (maybe Chrome) script for resizing RFF forum pics

Dear all,

I work on a smaller screen and some of my buddies only have netbooks. Consequently it's become quite a bore to view the oversized images posted to the forums. So I've knocked up a script to automatically resize larger pics according to the height of the browser window. To use it you'll have to install the famous firefox plugin 'greasemonkey' from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/. (Chrome doesn't need a plugin to install these scripts though I haven't tested it with chrome).

Then restart firefox and install my script from here:

If you press F11 to full-screen the browser you'll need to refresh (keyboard shortcut is F5) to get the resizer to size up the images; it doesn't do it automatically though I hope to find a solution to that one day.

I've also done a roomifier for RFF, which shifts the ads and other columns around and gives more width to forum posts which is great for wider pics. You may not need it on your screen but I need it on mine. See my signature for that.

You might think it would be a good idea for the RFF devs themselves to do something similar but I can see both technical and admin reasons for that being a very bad idea.

If you would like to reward me for my efforts then I am accepting old leicas and their lenses. However a Ferrari would do at a pinch. If you are feeling poor then a bottle of Pol Roger will be grudgingly accepted.

Awesome! It really is a pain to see those huge images. The reasons why people choose to post such big dimensions are many, and many will get fiercely defensive over the practice.

I'll try it out on a few threads I know this is rampant, and report back.

Works perfectly on Chrome 13.0 on Win 7 and Chromium Nightly Builds on Mac.

Does Chrome/chromium work on the Ipad? If so then it would seem that Naruto has found Ipad users a solution.

For IE there is a possibility that the IE7pro or Trixie will make it work. Inspired by Naruto's post I had a quick look around and this site may have other mac and IE solutions :

Browsers on the iPad (that I use regularly anyway) include the native Safari, Mercury, Maven and Atomic Web (none of which support plug-ins, etc.). Not sure if there's a ported Firefox/Chrome browser of if that even supports plug-ins though.

According to that web link I've supplied Safari does support 'userscripts', which while not strictly plugins, is what's required for my script. That doesn't mean it will definitely work as browser compatibility is another issue. It may also be the case that Safari on the Ipad doesn't support userscripts. I can't test it as I haven't an Ipad.

It's a tricky one. People have big screens these days and piddly little photos don't do themselves justice on such screens. At the same time if they try to cater for everyone by giving the viewer the choice then that can mean either significant storage issues or cpu issues (on-demand resizing on the server). If they try to do it in the browser then there are cross browser issues, which includes the horrible IE jaggy resize algo (maybe better in IE9).

I can see why they might wish to leave it as is and have us fight among ourselves.

I've updated the script. The new version won't work for chrome but version .1 will (instructions for installing the older version is on the webpage if you don't have it already).

You can now click an image to 'focus' it and there is now a little space top and bottom of the image which I find an improvement. You can change the options. Focusing is off by default. Right-click the greasemonkey icon and click on "User script commands" to enable it.

If it doesn't work for you then please pm me a bug report. I'll need to know the browser (ie. firefox) and it's version.

Please keep in mind that Firefox needs the greasemonkey plugin to use this script.

RFF does have a limit on gallery size: 200kb. for my stuff, that means 900mp or fewer on the longest axis. i use photoshop to size images to fit these parameters ...

True Paul, but people paste images into the threads that are linked from elsewhere, and are larger. Fine for big screens, but on small screens it scr*ws up the RFF Experience... 🙂

Yes, and, just like WRITING IN ALL CAPS, lots of people don't understand (I've found it's inversely proportional to the age of the poster) that it's just downright bad form.

As an old codger I find your remark offensive (but not really. 😀) I also limit my posted images to 800-900 px on the long side. They fit well on my 13" MB Pro screen.

Have you tried holding down the Ctrl key in the lower left hand side of your keyboard and then using the scroll wheel on your mouse? Or try holding down the Ctrl key in the lower left hand side of your keyboard and then tap your minus(-) and plus (+) keys.

A quick and dirty way to re-size on the fly.
