First few photos with the Mamiya 7

...and also my first shots with 120 film! These are a mixture of Velvia 50, HP5+ and Ektachrome E100G. All with the 80mm lens and scanned by the lab.

Today I ordered a cheap ($25) tripod for the few times I'll want to shoot 50 or 100-speed film in low light. The leaf shutter does help camera shake, though, and hand-holding is more dependable than with my SLRs. What challenges do you find shooting with this camera? What sort of photos does it encourage you to make?

Titles are subpar but nice images!

Thank you...I never liked making titles for my photos. Thanks for mentioning this, as I figured out how to remove the titles from all of them! I much prefer them that way.

it seems most rff-ers underestimate the power of words, here, titles. they can add an additional dimension to a picture, if chosen carefully.
for so many pictures here i miss a kind of explanation, they just stay in the meaningless dark without words.

This is true; though I couldn't tell you the title of even my most favorite photographs. Titles do help to draw attention and present that extra "dimension," but untitled images have a simplicity and focus on the image that I appreciate.

Nice images, don't miss titles either, all too often titles try do what is the job of the image, and can become a crutch for images not strong enough to stand on their own. Context is another matter though, and sometimes images do benefit from it 🙂

I like the images, and seems you are enjoying your new Mamiya. I fear a cheap tripod may prove a false economy though, something I've learned the hard way with my own images..

Ever heard of William Eggleston? Check out the titles of his most famous works...

As for the OP, the images are terrific. I especially love 'Untitled'. 🙂

The Mamiya 7 is my favourite camera; I don't shoot with it as much as it deserves.

100% agree. I'd rather have no tripod than a cheap one. I'd put that $25 into film or at least a couple of beers or something.

ok, no titles or additional words necessary for the pics shown here, except maybe the first one (what about that guy?). the dog picture is very funny! like communal workers doing their job, one digging and four standing around.

but many of the storytelling kind of pictures simply need context to reveal their full story, and this does not mean the picture´s too weak to do the talking by itself. i often appreciate the combination of picture and text.

@k__43: I've seen some of your shots already, in the Mamiya 7 & 7II pool I believe. I like what you do with the 65mm!

@Murchu & edge100: I've read plenty about tripods, though never owned one. Everyone says to just drop a grand for a carbon fiber Gitzo and a Markins or RRS head, but the small amount of desire I have to do tripod photography means it's tough to justify that sort of expenditure. I'd rather spend that kind of money on a scanner.

And, speaking of money...$2.20 per shot in total costs means I'm learning to edit before clicking the shutter 😛

Slik makes a nice line of tripods, and you can get used ones for less money. Their U-212 is my favorite all-around usage pod. Their only fault is the heads usually crack after a couple of years, so I replaced mine with ball heads.

Oh, and I like to make up titles of my own for 'untitled' shots. Like the doggie at the beach could be called "Digging to China". But titling your own shots is only neccessary if you need to search your growing database of images for a certain photo. Other than that, it's just something to put an end to the eternal question, "What the f...?"
