First Fuji GW670 rolls and a confession

Quite by accident really, I bought the Fuji. I had for some time been temptet by the Mamiyra 7 but put off by the price range. So for 400$ I found myself with new hardware 🙂

Bought myself 5 rolls of Fujicolor Pro 160S (outdatet) and off I went into the autum landscape, determined to make history.
Placed myself in a beatifull 1850ish garden, low sun providing nice light, yellow leaves covering the ground. Perfect. And from then it was upwards struggle.

I felt strangely restrained by the 6x7 format when working, and more so when looking at the films afterwards. Technically I was reasonably up to snuff, not too different from my Nikon F3. But there was some unsatisfactory about it I cant put my finger on.

Luckily I have more of the outdatet Fujicolor films 🙂 and have planned a winter session in the norwegean landscape + some rolls of costal areas come summer (even temptet by the Giro d'Italia start in Denmark in May hehe). From there on Ill have to take a close look into the mirror.

Very nice... and the bonus...

If you buy the first generation GW fuji rangefinders with the fixed lenses, you will find that you can purchase the 100mm lens camera AND the 65mm lens camera for far less than the price of one Mamiya 7 body, with both of those (similar) lenses.

Even if you move up to the third generation (III) series bodies this remains close to possible.

And, don't be fooled, the lenses are equivalent to, if not marginally better than the Mamiya Sekors.

However, many years of Mamiya Sekor lenses and Fuji EBC coated lenses have proven to me they are both considerably acceptable on IQ.

I love #2 as is, and you should try #3 in B&W. Works better for that scene, I find.

If you can still get E6 developed reasonably, try that some time. It will blow you away.

When you print 35mm do you use full frame? or crop to 45/810 ratios?
I personally prefer the 35/69 proportions, maybe because I used 35 for so long.

I think the first and third really called out for the Golden Ratio. #2 is very nice.

As I said, cant explain this uneasy "not satisfactory" feeling. Most likely its a minds game in my head, starting with the initial struggle in the garden. Time to go into the lotus position doing the yumhhhhhh... 🙂 Seriously, I realise now it will most likely just be matter of time before I get more relaxed with the FW670.

Batterytypehah! : Get your point on the BW, have made a note on that one. Also will remember the E6 when I run out of Fujicolor hehe

Landshark: dont quite follow you there I afraid. I usually dont crop my frames, but if I feel the picture will gain (substantially) from it, I will crop whatever needed.

Kuzano: Thx for the tip! Right now Im hesitant on buying new hardware... (although the FW690 might solve my "problems")

Give it some time? I know what you mean about 6x7, though. So easy for it to look like a weirdly composed square where formal tensions are making it look not quite square. I've only used a 6x7 for one day, borrowed, so I didn't have an investment and need to push to see if it was worth holding onto the camera or not.

Having recently bought a GW690, I am also finding both a rangefinder and the size confusing. The size, I will get used to. I know already that using a rangefinder/optical viewfinder like this requires some adjustments on my part. Something about the ground glass having already flattened things? Even in a 35mm SLR, you are looking at ground glass. That strange open view of a rangefinder throws me off when I first come back to one.

By the way, I paid $350 for my GW690.

The third shot is wonderful.

I shot 6x9 for a long time and I recently switched to the fuji GW670II. Give it 5 rolls and you'll start to understand the compositional arrangement of the frame. Cheers

Im actually looking forward for the next outing, will wait for snow and sun (and frost!). Did a outdor shooting this weekend with a Nikon F3, that broke down because of the cold :bang: Saved by a Fuji X100 jeezzz. No batteries in the GW670, so I should be fine 🙂

Neils that link is a 404...

Regarding the Fuji RF it's a fine camera. I would suggest going to flickr and looking at some of the 6/7 format shots Fuji, Mamiya 7, Pentax 67 and you should start getting some ideas for your composition. It's a small change between the usual 2/3 format of 35 mm cameras.
