After a year of agonising, I bit the bullet and picked up an M8 today.
I skim read the manual, fitted my 35 Biogon and went for a stroll along the Thames. Here are the results..

I really enjoyed the experience, the M8's OS is a bit of a dog and I can't get either Capture One LE v375 nor the Leica Digital Capture to install on my Mac (they keep bombing out!) so I'm fudging it the best I can with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS3.
Any ideas?

Capture One version 3 will not load on the Mac.

Download Version 4 from the Capture One website, and your license for Version 3 will work, they give you one free upgrade.

I have not tried the Digital Capture app but my understanding is it won't work on the mac, and this is an outstanding issue.

What Mac, what OS :-D, which version? C1 4.5 and 3.7.7 both do work on my MacBookPro with OSX 10.5 installed. LR and PS3 do understand M8's RAW data dng files. You may want to code the Biogon sometime.

Regards
Ivo

funnily enough having downloaded Capture One v4.5 I still can't activate the code...I've a funny feeling that the shop I bought my M8 from may have used this code. As the disk package had been previously opened. I'll contact the shop to investigate tomorrow.

Thanks for you tips guys!

hi,

please don't take this the wrong way, but why spoil the ship for h'apeny worth of tar. Download aperture and/or lightroom and you'll buy one before the 30 day trial is over. I have aperture, your photos look like you'll make small tweeks rather than PS total re-engineering. i have recently tried the Nik software plug-ins very impressive.
check http://www.apple.com/aperture/tutorials/ for some decent introductions to the software. i'm very sure you'll find the same for lightroom.
i like these programs aperture (and lightroom) because i send much less time on the preparation of the photo and more time on the output - to the web, to my iPhone, to books, slide show on the tv. I 'understand' lightroom handles printers better then aperture, but as i don't have a photo-printer but use external labs i don't know.

you have made one treat - buying the m8 now complete the experience. get a proper photo application.

I have the Adobe DNG converter on my machine, and then just use PS from there. Much simpler interface.

I use one program, you use two, and that is more simple?

I use computers all day every day and don't want to spend my leisure time at one, seconds count for me.
at work i have to use a PC, but for my own time, which is far more important i use a mac.
PS is a massive program to say 'just use PS' either suggests you don't use the functionality - and don't need it - like me. or you are belittling what you actually do in the application to make it sound simple.

hey i don't want to sound aggressive - i guess it might come over that way, and i have PS, but the last time i opened it was 2 yrs ago. I just gave up with post shooting tweeks and concentrate on what i see in the viewfinder.

Capture One that came on the CD with my M8 didn't start on my mac. I downloaded C1 4.1 (or 4.0.x, don't remember) and activated it without problems.
Have you looked at the phaseone website? There is a faq-section discussing activation problems.

I was contrasting the interface of Adobe DNG converter against the interface of Capture One, I found Capture One to be much less intuitive in use.

I rarely do anything more than levels adjustments, a little burning or dodging and some sharpening in PS. Oh, and resizing. I'm no digital photographer, but do shoot some here and there. Still haven't made a final print from a digital file, and don't have any intention of doing so. Snapshots sure, but my work is done on film and in the real darkroom. I find PS to be a much more useful tool for those that create illustrations than for me- the bulk of the filters are pointless for what I do and the time spent in front of the computer is not anywhere as fun as the time I spend in the darkroom. Yes, the ability to dodge only highlights or shadows is nice at times- but after twenty-five years of serious darkroom work I can get what I want easily and quickly enough using chemistry, and have a great time doing it.

This morning I printed and never once thought "I'd rather be sitting in front of the computer". No I was on my feet, moving around, enjoying some good music, some bubbling water and getting my proof prints done- without the drone of the inkjet! Not quite 'physical labor' but no PS potato am I!

Fair point! I think I will give both Aperture and Lightroom a go and see how I get on, I'm used to both Adobe and Apple software so it does seem the next logical step forward. I thought Capture One might've been a simple solution straight out of the box.

Thanks but yes I had tried the FAQ section, but their steps didn't solve my activation problem which is why I suspect the code has been activated by the shop I bought it from
