First photographic project done and published. Opinions?

BTW, I've noticed almost all people commenting so far are New Yorkers. Probably the project hits close to home for a lot of us. I really wonder what this all would look like to non-New Yorkers and non-Americans. So far I've got a lot of interesting feedback from friends (I'm not a native New Yorker, I'm originally from Peru).

First of all, I like the fact that there is a holistic objective and as someone who studied (but gave it up) cultural anthropology many moons ago and still dabble in it as an amateur, I like the subject area. Also, I know a little about big city subway stations, having lived in Boston for a few years.

I shared your website with a practicing ethnographer and we came up with these opinions:

  • Co-presence is a proven technique in field work and is appropriate here.
  • Non-intrusiveness is appropriate.
  • The overall feel that I get is not so much 'civility' but rather tolerance of having to be in a sardine can with all these other people but what'cha gonna do?
  • Some of the photos are shot from a perspective that skew them toward supporting your premise rather than presenting them as they are.
  • The study is incomplete - the subway system presents an opportunity to study an entire ecosystem and its many inhabitants and their behaviors, e.g., the pole huggers vs the door
standers vs. the squeezers vs the sprawlers vs other types of subway riders.
  • We had other input, but I think the above are good enough as food for thought.
