The thing is, how does the camera know when you're focusing a manual lens like a M mount lens or an old OM lens?
It doesn't. But to magnify the focus spot is just a couple of button pushes. Press the 'Info' button until you get a green square on screen, then press 'OK' to zoom in on the square. Pressing 'OK' again zooms back out for framing.

Sounds like the moment would be past by the time you do all that. Maybe o.k. for static scenes.

If auto magnification doesn't work with manual focus, ie. adapted, lenses, then forget it! This is a major perk on the G1, correct?
There's no auto magnification on the G1 with manual focus lenses (apart from the 4/3rds lenses from Olympus and Panasonic which are MF only due to lack of Imager AF support).
You need to manually activate the focus magnification, it's a button press to the area selection then a confirmation press to activate.
