I just got my first roll of slide film back, talk about amaizing quality! I knew slide film was good but I had never experinaced it first hand. Needless to say I am pretty happy with the results. I almost never want to shoot print film again. The only issue I have with slide film is it's price, but i guess you get what you pay for.
This is the Oregon coast at Lincoln city.
This is a shot on the freeway in Salem, Oregon.
Hey does anyone have some examples of 400 and 1600 slide film to share? I have been wondering about the quality of slide film vs print at high iso. I have noticed that I don't seem to get as good of results from color as I do from black and white at high iso.

Joe,
I went through a transformation after my first rolls of slide film. In fact, I almost never shoot C-41.
As for quality of ISO 400 and 1600 slide film... I have used both and the grain is not as noticeable as it is in print film. At least, not to me. However, with the really fast film you must remember that it's actually an ISO 400 film designed for push-developing, so you must clarify it when you turn it in for developing.
Right now, I can't recall what I've shot in ISO 400 slide, or if I scanned it, but I'm sure something will come up. I simply don't use it much because sometimes I get unwanted depth of field.
In any event, welcome to the world of positive film!

hummm.... an expense proposition... i only shoot slide with mamiya 7ii, sometimes with panoramic kit... otherwise cheap c-41 would do.

Wait until you see 120 or larger slides

Slide film is great, especially for medium format. I still use c41 most of the time for street and portrait photos because of it's latitude. I use slide for still life and landscape etc. when I really have the time to 'plan' the shot.
Also, c41 film is so much cheaper and I can get it processed in an hour (sometimes I'm really impatient!)

While I love chrome, especially Kodachrome, I find getting good scans at a lab a real challenge. So until I get my own scanner, I shoot C41 when I will need a decent scan immediately, but shoot chrome when I want ultimate quality and can wait (or pay) for a really good scan.
Not to turn this thread into a scanning thread, I've gotten good scans from Reala 100, and I'm anxious to try the new version of Portra 160NC.

I use slide film almost all of the time. Seeing the results on print film is a let down after using slide for so long. 120 is even better. My only problem is in scanning. I need to upgrade from my flatbed to a better scanner. Scans come out soft so I loose much of what I love about slide film.

Buy a projector, with good short focus lens, lots in photo shops second hand, cover a wall with white sheet, kill all lights. Shoot at 5.6 with double gauss or sonnar, slow chrome, off a heavy tripod, bracket at +- 1/2 stop to get saturation just right, stand a foot away from detail on wall.
Scanner wont get near.
Spoils you, worse if you have a good 6x6 projector it will make you cry, you need a bigger wall, now 6x8...

Hey I was eating, a real world example...
If your audience is the bride and groom post the honeymoon and you are proofing the 250 candids you took, they wont ask about web/e-mail.
All they said was 'sorry my (sic the brides) father asked you to slop taking photos'.
The next problem is how you deal with the other media like prints etc.
The answer was the lead acid battery was flat anyway, its sg balls, had stopped floating, and the cycle time going out alarmingly, I only had daylight chrome and it was dark. I handed over the slides and left the problem with them as SEP.
If you take a dig cam of a portion of the sheet...

Slide is excellent ! If possible buy yourself a lightbox : to open a box of slides back from lab, put them on the lightbox, and view with a lens is a big pleasure! Only bigger is to project later the best selected ones !
Ok, i know there are some other pleasures...but not slides related. In Italy the cost is not so high if you compare with printing 36 photos froma roll, where maybe only a part is of high quality. With slide you select and have printed only the best ones.
ciao, rob

Most of the color in the rail/aircraft and auto photos is Provia 400F:
