My first M was an M3 and it was just a wonderful experience as it was of such quality.

I am sure you will start to enjoy the camera and once you are comfortable with it you will be knocked out by the quality of image that you will get.

Is yours a double wind or later single wind? My first was a double wind and once used to the action just became part of the pleasure of taking photos.

Good on you. I did a similar thing a long while ago when I was afraid of losing photography altogether. Sold the lot and got an M4 with 50 and 35 Summicrons.

I’ve never owned a film camera and have never even seen a rangefinder in person.

Rangefinder or else, more important, welcome to film shooters club. Big question is what you gonna load your Leica with. Choices are still plentifull and diverse.

Welcome aboard. I agree with all the other inmates, none of us are crazy but just outside, over the wall with the barbed wire topping, there are a lot of crazy people. Some of them don't even use film...

Mine is a single wind. Although I have yet to receive my lens yet, I have snapped a few "practice pics" already- 🙂

I shoot film to be competitive as a pro, but I ALWAYS shoot film for myself and ALWAYS with my M4. I have tried all focal lengths, but still prefer 35mm

Your BIGGEST problem starts now - sorting good advise from bad, and do remember that people will swear by their choice of film, dev, times etc, with the best of intentions. the only advise I would offer is to see the look or feel that the various film available can achieve - choose a couple and stick to them same with dev, paper etc

Oh, and read Roger Hicks books.

If you liked this picture then go through mfogiel's flickr site, you will find a number of different films with various developer combinations shot almost all varying lighting conditions. Take your time you can learn a lot in one site only and the results are well reproduced to note the minute differences.

Let me give you one piece of advice, if I may. M equipment is expensive, as you already know. More equipment will not make you better. Stick with your initial setup until you genuinely feel that you are getting the absolute maximum you can out of it. Familiarity and practice are far more important than having this lens or that body that may be infinitesimally better than what you have. In short, say no to GAS.

I guess I am also crazy. I have never used film or rangefinder. Yet I just purchased a M6....

No need for you and Rockhopper to feel crazy. I know a guy who bought a $3,000 telescope before learning the simplest basics (i.e., where the Big Dipper and the North Star were). He learned by doing and enjoyed it, as you will!
